I worked with someone that was in the Coast Guard before I came in the military...he worked down in Miami so it was mostly anti-drug-trafficing...he said it was pretty cool... |
It would be tight as hell to get stationed in SoCal and being in the coast guard. How often are there storms out there, like never. Do they move around like the other branches or is it once you get to your first place thats where you stay?
|
Quote:
I think they're more situated to their specific state/area...kinda like the National Guard.... |
Damn I shoulda went in the coast guard. I wonder if I can crossover from the Air Force.
|
Az you in the Air Force?
|
Quote:
Yeah I'm stationed in Tucson at Davis-Monthan AFB, I'm a weather forecaster and I hate my job. Not the actual job but I guess its more that I hate where I work/who I work for. What do you do? |
Quote:
|
I am a c130 navigator... not like those EC130s.. they don't do crap.. I do 10x the stuff they do.. I wish I was an EC130 nav..
|
Tight. At least you have a cool job and make alot of cash. Are you gonna retire from the Air Force? Are you gonna ever get a job with an airline? Where are you stationed?
|
I am in little rock until I go to north carolina.. I could go into airlines if I go to pilot training.. but flying is kicking my ass right now.. so pilot training will wait another year or so.. at least.. I will make it a career.. You weather guys crack me up though.. When I mission plan I ask you guys what winds we have.. a lot of times the weather guys here are kinda lazy and just tell me stuff like "northerly winds".. lol It actually makes my mission planning easier.
|
I wish I worked in one of the small weather stations. But I work in a damn Hub where everyone is anal and on the look out to **** you over. In the last year there have been about 5-7 people that have been kicked out of the military. I've had a stripe taken away cause someone didnt get the answer they wanted and thought I was trying to cover up something.
If you ever fly over to the western states we'll be doing the briefing for your trip back. |
Quote:
Yeah the key is getting approved, I dont think my chance of that is too good since I'm in a critically manned career field. |
Quote:
Really?? That sucks.. Yea they are pretty laid back even though AETC has a big representation here.. we do get decent weather briefings for tac missions though.. |
Yeah I hate this place with every ounce of my being.
Isn't the ICAO for where your at KLIT? |
Quote:
For little rock I think.. LRAFB is KLRF though |
Oh yeah thats right. Arkansas huh? Hows that place?
|
Yea it sucks... armpit of the sound.. state can't decide whether it wants to be hot or cold.. I prefer cold... especially for tac missions.. heat sucks in the 130.
|
Quote:
ooohhh, yeah. If you're in a critically manned career field, you're pretty much screwed. How much longer do you have in your enlistment?? |
Quote:
Just under 3 years. Once thats done I'm going to finish getting my degree and either come back in as an officer in a medical career field(pharmacy) or see whats available on the outside. I feel like I've wasted the last 3 years of my life, since I haven't been able to get any college done. |
Quote:
So what do you do when you're not flying? |
Quote:
Whats your job and where are you stationed? |
Quote:
They fly me all the time almost.. right now when I am not flying I have ground training.. That is at least a break from flying. I got night flights next week.. NVGs gimme a headache. Other than that mission planning.. making charts.. but not much else.. |
Quote:
So, you're a 6-year enlistee too, huh? Welcome to getting screwed over. Well, good luck with whatever you decide to do. I have a little less than a year and a half left in my enlistment and with all of this AEF shit going on, I don't think I'll be re-enlisting.....I don't really know what I'm gonna do yet. Guess I'll see how things go over the next year.... |
Quote:
Oh, I always wondered. Do the pilots do the same? I used to want to try and be a pilot so I could eventually work in an airline but all that flying kinda turned me off to the idea. Plus I dont have much time til I reach the age cut off, and having to wear glasses is another hurdle I'd have to jump. |
Quote:
yup, when i enlisted I figured I was going to stay in for 20 anyway. Damn that was a huge mistake. The 7K$ was nice, well the 5k$ or so that actually went in my pocket. The military paying taxes what kinda damn sense does that make. |
Quote:
You can get waivers for everything... but yea everyone in the flying community flies an average of 3 days a week. Of course aircraft type will make the vary. If you fly high level tanker stuff it's not that big of a deal. I do 6 hour low level missions at 300AGL and it really sucks sometimes. I get headaches, dehydrated...a little sick sometimes (have not thrown up yet), plus I gotta stand up the whole time.. I would work for it if you wanted it.. |
300ft damn thats low. I would but I've lost interest, mainly because I'm married and my wife doesnt want me to be gone all the time even after the military with an airline.
|
Quote:
I was told by MEPS (sp?) that my career field was only offered for a 6 year enlistment...yeah, that was bullshit...and on top of that, they didn't start offering an enlistment bonus in my career field until my 6th month of Tech School so of course I didn't get shit....oh well...and I know how you feel about the military paying taxes but that's a whole other story...... |
So, Whats the deal with taxes?...i thought you didn't pay or somethin...
|
Quote:
I friggin wish!! Damn that would be so sweet. Actually we dont pay taxes on a small part of out income but its not that much of a help, a little, but not much. |
What would a new recruit expect to be payed once he joined the AF?
and what kinda bonuses do they give? |
Quote:
Oh dang that sucks. My dad was a Marine recruiter working at the MEPS and he knew the air force recruiters so I didnt have to worry about getting screwed over. So i screwed myself. If you really want out you could say you're gay, but even I dont hate my job that much. |
Quote:
wtf, lol, thats funny... do people actually do that? |
Quote:
About 1100 before taxes and you be given a dorm room and free food. As far as bonuses go, don't let that be you deciding factor. There's one reason why the military offers bonuses: they cant keep people in the the career field. Which might be because the job sucks(like mine), or its dangerous, or the money on the outside is alot better than staying in once your trained(most computer jobs). |
Quote:
Yeah I've heard a bunch of stories, so if you start talking to a recruiter and he promises you something get ahold of me or someone else in the military and find out if its true. |
Quote:
I don't pay state taxes at all.. I am a texas resisdent and will be while they have have state taxes. |
Well, what jobs do you think would be nice...and what score do you need to get on that test to get them?
I took the practice test at my friends uncle's house...and i got a 50 on it...that was 2 years ago...i'm definetly sure that i can get 65+ now... |
Quote:
I'm a cali resident and i don't pay them either, i just had to fill out some form saying I'm a resident but I dont live there, not many people know about it. |
Quote:
Personal and information management, if you want to get some college done. Those are easy as hell to do. |
Quote:
What are you're interests and goals?? |
I just wnt something that i can do, and enjoy until i retire...or to do something that sucks and get payed a lot for it until i retire...lol
|
Well something you might enjoy, I might think sucks. Like maybe you like cooking, I don't. If you want something challenging and you make alot of cash inside or out, then an air traffic control job is pretty cool.
|
I don't want something really challenging...cuase sometimes i just can't handle a lot of pressure...I just need something where i can go to work every day and know what i'm gonna do...I need structure...
|
Quote:
Just about any job in the military is going be structured. I say Personel or Information management, low stress, easy to do, off on holidays and weekends. Basically a 9-5. And you can do some college at the same time. |
What kind of bootcamp/training thing do they do in the AF?
|
Its six weeks long and its not that hard. Nothing like the Marines or Army. Sure you get yelled at but big deal everyone there is getting yelled at. The exercise stuff is a piece of cake, anyone can do it.
|
Quote:
Hey Mobbo, I jumped in on this one kinda late...if you have any questions about the Air Force or the military in general and Az or V8 doesn't get a chance to answer them, let me know and I'll do what I can to help you.... |
alright, cool...
|
oh no the armyguy read the military post
haha actually in the army you get treated like your twelve. Stupid things go on. Room inspections at 0330. I live on the biggest post in all of the military. I'm a 14J (juliet). it's a sentinel radar operator. I track anything that moves in the sky and classify it. the only thing i can think of this transfering over is to an air traffic controller. um my basic was 9 weeks, and was tough. never thought i'd drag my head in woodchips but i did. I went to Ft. bliss tx in el paso for 19 weeks of school (damn) where we still had drill sergeants even though i was told it was like college. i got no bonus for join but i did get 54,000 dollars for college (24,000 army college fund 30,000 MGIB). i enlisted for 2 years. since i'm from illinois the state pays for all my college. i dont pay taxes. we get all weekends off. one four day weekend a month and other cool shit. my pay grade is e-3 and i make 1305 a month. i pay a car payment, digital cable, cable modem, surround sound..new computer..the whole works. It's not that bad. Drinking is fun =) i dunno if you wanna know about the army talk to me
