Does anyone else here notice the drop in quality of our movies lately?

I mean in the last 3-4 years it seems to me that the quality of them keeps sliding.

I definitely agree movies have gone down hill. Old movies were based upon plot, acting, and cinematography. Today I believe true cinematography has taken a slip in quality toward special effects. It seems like everyone blows these gigantic budgets that would fund a small country for a year just to make ridiculous special effects for a movie with no plot, poor acting, and is almost identical (minus slight differences in special effects) to about a dozen other movies made in the past 5 years.

I also don't like how movies seem to base their entire soundtrack on some ridiculous pop songs that just came out. What ever happened to having a unique musical score composed for the movie that actually jives with the scenes at hand? Or doing something like Quentin Terrantino and using good music? I just about crapped when I was watching Schreck and stupid pop music was playing, talk about ruining a good movie with a poor soundtrack (although the Sir Mixalot scene in the outtakes was pretty hilarious).

The movies I've liked the most are often ones that are liked the least by the GP.

I think the quality of big money films has decreased, largely because of the funding and big-studio structure. Maybe if you pick a movie at a big theater at random now vs 5 years ago you'll get a worse movie now, but if you read up and aim for the ones with citematic value, they're probably still there in as much quantity as ever.

Deep Blue Sea had an awesome score, along with The Rock.. Trevor Rabin is a genious..and so is Hans Zimmer..

But those movies are like ... 1996.. hehe..

total amount of good movies has dropped, there are still some good ones coming out, just not as many. castaway was good, signs was good, but those are the only 2 that come to mind

I tend not to look at the quality of movies when I go see them. I tend to look at entertainment value....which is also what the directors/producers/and film companies are looking at as well. I can normally tell by a movie's trailer if I'm going to enjoy it or not. Some have fooled me (The Royal Tennebaums being one of them...that was a horrible horrible movie) but not too many. Some movies aren't made to be the best quality (best actors, cinematography, etc.) they are made to be entertaining. I think people look way to into fictional movies and try to make them real life. Sure half the stuff that happens in say XXX would never ever be able to happen in real life....THAT'S THE POINT!!!! Movies like that are supposed to take you by surprise, make you sit on the edge of your seat....you get the idea. I could see you basing this thread on non-fictional movies...say Ali. I haven't seen the movie, I'm not a fan of Ali myself nor do I like the sport of boxing. I have no desire to see it what so ever....but my point is....that movie should be something of high quality because it's based on someone's life. It needs to be 100% accurate. It has to capture the feeling and angles ect that it did in real life. Standards such as acting, cinematography, plot, everything you guys think that makes a "good/great" movie should be applied to non-fictional movies, not fictional ones. I do think quality movies can be made with less of a budget...but it depends on the type of film you are doing....action flicks are definitely going to need a bigger budget otherwise they are going to look like they were made in the 80s....and we all know how we feel about the quality of 80s movies.

And maybe its just me but when a person is holding a class in their hands and one minute is full and the next its not, thats just shotty editting.

I think the ratio of great movies now-a-days has increased dramatically..... My wife And I rent a lot of movies, and I can name very few bad one....

the matrix was a great movie! I do hope they dont ruin it though with a 2 and 3 like what happen with Jerasic Park though. Broke the mold on the first one and ruined the rest

I think the reason 2 and 3 of jurassic park were bad is because the ending of the 1st one didn't really hint another movie...

i think there has been TONs of great movies in the last 3 or 4 years...Saving Private Ryan is for sure my fav.....the martrix i also like...all the james bond movies....i tend to like war movies..not just cause of fighting..i look at the quality of movies to as well as entertainment value..Thin Red line i think its called? that was a good one as well...i could sit here for an hour naming good movies...i dont think the quality of movies have decreased at all....i think its just getting better..i love the special effects in movies as well like star wars....or other certain action movies or science fictions..etc....just my 2 cents...

There have been lots of good movies, but there have been very very very many crappy movies as well. I would hardly call movies such as XXX, Scary Movie, Brotha Man, Jackass to name a few as being good movies. Admitedly XXX is worth seeing and is a decent action flik, but I wouldn't call it a good movie. Part of the problem with bad movies is that movies are coming out faster and faster these days, less time is being spent to make them quality since the companies want volume to keep ticket sales high at theaters.

Movies such as the Count of Montecristo, Minority Report, Signs to name a few are pretty good.

Of course everybody has a different opinion of what a good movie is. Personally, I like a movie that I can watch time and time again and it's still a good movie. Movies like that tend to have a good story line, a timeless musical score, and good cinematography without excessive reliance upon special effects. Using special effects extensively is fine as long as they're not relied upon as the only worthwhile portion of the movie.

I know plenty of people who think movies are just getting better and better. I disagree with them, but my opinion of a good movie varies significantly from theirs.

See thats what I'm talking about Montercristo wasn't big on special effects yet it was a good moive, MP was full of effects and was a good movie aswell. Signs used a few effects and was a good movie...

The Emperors New Groove - funny but not as good as other Disney movies. Let me guess, you've got a great personality?

Van Wilder - never seen it

Monster's Inc - not as good as I expected. Totally NOT like what I thought it would be based upon trailers. Worth seeing and overall a good movie, but not as good as other Pixar films.

Mallrats - good movie

Office Space - Excellent movie. Timeless for anybody who's ever had a corporate job.

either Austin Powers - funny and good comedies for repeated viewing. I'd hesitate to call them good movies, but I'd call them good comedies.

Adam Sandler movie (minus Little Nicky) - Amen. I think it's one of the dummest movies I've ever seen that was passed off as something better.

Of course comedy is a type of movie just like action, drama, adventure, sci fi, etc.

I can't really explain that well, but there are many funny comedies that I wouldn't call good movies. When I think of a good movie I think of something everybody should see (of course not everybody will like it).....when I think of a good comedy, I think anybody who wants a laugh should see it....however there are funny comedies that not everybody will find amusing (South Park comes to mind). I dunno, it's kinda a wack rating system, even I don't really understand it.

I dont know if its the quality of movies have dropped or we are just disappointed because of the "hype" the media and everyone else builds them up to be.

There are still lots of good movies that come out. I personally love the visual affects and cool explosions, but thats just me.:D

dont get me wrong, i like visual effects too, but if theres no plot the movie might only be good one time, movies that have a good plot you can watch over and over

This thread was too long for me to read everything....Just thought I'd add that I think most movies suck now adays....However I did see the ring last week, and I was literally scared to go home to bed (i live alone) I was freaked out.

I also saw 8Mile and that was the gayest movie in the world I can't believe I wasted 8 bucks to go see it. It was terrible and had no plot or story to it at all. Don't go see it.

They're going to continue to make "crappy" or excellent films as long as there are people going to see them, rent them or buy them. You may have thought the movie sucked, but the person next to you may have thought it was the best thing they've seen since sliced bread. We're all entitled to our own opinions, but until you start making your own films, there's nothing you can really do about it.
