Box vs. Music....

i listen to drum adn bass...what kidna box would you get for dum and bass?

ported or sealed. just get really good midbass drivers, or try to get more midbass from your aftermarket speakers. drum rolls and bass of that nature comes from the upper bass region (midbass: ~60hz-200ish hz)

I listen to a lot of DnB/jungle and I have always used sealed boxes and they sounded good. I also ran A LOT of power though

for drums, a sealed box will do much better. You want something tight.

I did notice a big difference in my bass when i went from a sealed box to a bandpass, sealed was better with drum beats, while bandpass seemed to sound better with deep bass like old school rap

A bandpass will give an artificial richness to bass within a certain fz range.. but that range is slim and like I said, it isnt a high fidelity reproduction.

Plus if you run more power through it and louer volumes the sound seems to disappear

if you can build a ported box right, then it will be as accurate as a sealed box, but it will hit harder too. :bow:

A ported box wll be accurate in its tune fz range (not as much as sealed though).. However the problem is its narrow fz range in which it performs well.


And for hitting (drums/dance music/rock), a sealed box does much better, simply because of the air suspension effect.

then you can port it really low (say 20hz?). he wants drum bass and those type of bass, but they don't occur at that low of a frequncies so it would be ok if he ported the box. u can tune a port as low as any sealed box, but you just have to get the right subsonic filter setting to accomodate the tuned port. besides...if you can tuned the port as low as a sealed boxed sub can go, then u shouldn't really matter that much about the higher frequncies because both should play above 60hz. then again, its not sub frequncies anymore if you go beyond 60hz.

sure you can tune it as low as you want.. well actually it also depends on the driver, but for the sake of this conversation, lets say you can.

if he listens to material located in the 45-60hz range, why would be want to tune it lower? Yes the lows would be nice, but it will definately lack punch. the tuned range will not cover all thats above it...

furthermore, he has a 10" driver, tuning it low will result in terrible efficiency and utlimately, if he listens loud, it'll fry (distorsion from amp and operation below its Fs).

simple equation,
music with hitting bass + lower bass = requires greater amplitude in fz range.


If he tunes it to 50hz, what comes of the *bass* part of his drum and bass music?

alright, you seem cool, so lets keep going..


this debate is about ported or sealed. which one is better in this case. meaning, loud and clear.


the "tightness" of the sound will be close, but it depends on certain things.. the size of the ported box, for a sealed box the size is much less of a factor (almost N/A if sealed properly).

if you want a ported box to get loud, you'll have to give it more internal volume (bass wont be linear).. right? then what happens to your tightness?! it decreases..

In a sealed box, the acoustic suspension assists the mechanical suspension.
