either which way, it's going to make life hard, especially if you're trying to keep it legal in cali. The b16 would probably be the easeist to deal with and get legal. The b18 is obviouls bigger so you'd have more power, getting it legal sounds like it'd be a pain in the ARS!!

umm, the (i think the techy name for it is) B20?

i'm trying to say the CR-V engine....it has optioanl AWD, and its bigger :)

Well I think as long you stay with a usdm engine you should be fine about legal stuff. Just make sure that the engine is not older than your car that is illegal. If I were you I get the b18c1 I think thats the LS teg one. I might be wrong. Correct me if I am. I think that engine would be great to have. Either one is a great choice though. So which ever you can get a better price on id get it.

i posted a similar question in the turbo section and i was debating between a h22 (prelude engine) or a b18c (94+ Integra SIR-g) with forced induction. I am gonna end up going with the b18c simply because i didn't wanna lose the power steering and the ac, And the h22 needs to many thing custom made, also the price will be about the same for both.

B18 is sweet but...if you want the ease of legality I would have to say the b16 is the better choice. If Michigan still had its smog laws Id be forced to get the b16 as well. However, those laws are gone and my savings for the b18 grow daily. I once thought about the h22, in fact I posted something between the h22 and the b18 here a little while ago. h22 is basically good in a civic for drag racing and thats all (or so I was told).

i weighed both the engines pros and cons...and i am gonna do a b18c and then later forced induction so the b18c will be stock for a bit. the h22 just need so much work for a daily driver in a civic that it kinda turned me off to it. plus i want both ac and power steering another con of the h22. The b18c is pretty swift and i think i will be happy with it once i get it...

B18C1 is just as smog legal as a B16A....so it doesnt matter. with the H22A you can keep power steering. H22A doesnt really need any custom work.

honda - b18c1 is the GSR motor, LS is the B18B.
the crv motor is a great motor, its a bored LS - hence the extra .2L
you arent going to get that AWD in your civic though.

i forgot to add, you have a 5g civic.....you'll have to do a little denting here and there to get the H22A to fit. nothing horrible.

i though people always break axels because of the torque and power...you would need custom axels. custom engine mounts which are like $600. and you can't keep both your ac and power steering, sorry let me rephrasie that you can't keep both without pay a truck load of money. And people complaing about not being able to get tracton on street tires...

yeah axles break, get custom ones. the mounts can be had for about $500. i meant to say you can keep AC.... www.jdmshit.com has what you need.
power steering, you can keep if you can get crafty - not worth it imo.
anyways, you are looking at the same power output as if you throw a turbo on your SOHC VTEC motor - roughly.

Hey Slow: where did you get that?

I heard that the dyno's on jackson racing (super charger peeps) are faked. They used some sort of extra high octane racing fuel for the car, and also had other mods that they didn't mention in the notes of the dyno.

lol, Hybrid doesn't know much he always ask me...

Aight here goes

You got a 95 so the b16a1 and a2 series are out..but who'd want an a1 anyways cable tranny..yuck

b16a3 = Civic Si's (99-00)
b18c1 = Integ GSR (94-00)
B20b = 97?-99 Crv
B20z = 00-00

Could be wrong on that b20b can't remember its 2am leave me alone lol

now the H22a is a tricky motor
and tons of debates are going around from understeer to non
here's the deal its the heaviest motor due to cast iron block and a buncha goodies...can easily get power from it my say is this though

You wanna turn? then don't get an h22a ..crusing around the streets n stuff will be aight but if ur haulin ass and got a 80/20 weight biase on ur car..the front end is understeer like crazy

I say go b18c1 because a b16a3 and a b18c1 are getting around the same price (shop around) ..keep it USDM so you keep smog legal and be done

and the deal with company dyno's is they increase the timing, and force air into the car with blowers and what not....
its great for a few dyno runs but it'd eventually blow the car

also they put Ice water in air/water intercoolers when they do them..

*smack my ***** up*
lol where ya at hybrid ur not on AIM :( I finally get my crap workin and ur not even here..... ;(

B16A2 came in the 99-00 Si.
97-98 B20B
98-00 B20Z
94-01 is the B18C1.
understeer in the H22A can be corrected easily with a thicker rear swaybar and proper suspension mods elsewhere.
my sn changed to my name on here, hybrid name is gone, glen :D

well thanks for all the replies but i only got my eyes set on the b18 or the b16

go with the b18 more power for about the same money plus everythig will bolt in pretty easily

slowEJ6

B18C if you want all motor, B16A if you plan on going FI. imo.

10-17-2002, 11:42 PM

where did you hear that? highest fuel I know of, and still be put in cars, is 125 octane. Thats what some of the people in la get from LAX when they street race. Guy I know says it costs him over $75 to fill his Civic DX (with a b18c and turbo so dont say "DX?!") Even with that he says there isnt really a huge jump in performance over Sunoco Ultra.

um, from my knowlege a b16a2 (usdm si motor) has 160 HP and the B18c1 has 170hp (usdm) I dont think it is worth the extra money to buy the b18 when you can put the extra money into the b16 and get much more horse from that.

thast just my opinion though

slowEJ6
10-18-2002, 12:54 AM
exactly....however the B16A head flows NOTICEABLY better than the B18C1. but it doesnt have what it takes to be an all motor monster - which is why i recommended it for FI apps and the B18C1 for all-motor apps, but honestly id recommend the C5 over the C1 anydays, even for the price difference.

drdingo21
10-18-2002, 05:40 PM
i thoght the c5 couldn't halndle turbo with outs some upgrades....

slowEJ6
10-18-2002, 06:16 PM
it can handle boost, not a lot, but it can w/ good tuning. however i said i recommend it for all-motor over the b18c1, not for FI. :rambo:

Its the extra torque your paying for, not the extra 10 HP.

not to mention.....the price difference between a B16A2 and a B18C1 is what? $1100 maybe?
thats i/h/e, that may get you to the same spec as a B18C, but so what? you can hang with a stock B18C1 hybrid? B18C gets the same mods and you are back to square one again with having to upgrade more to keep up.

Well I have the same car and went with a b16a2. Both b16a and b18c r going to be street legal but the si engine is a better buy for the money.
