riddle me this....

Two people are each on separate islands such that they are unable to transfer items amongst themselves. They each have a treasure chest, a lock, and a key that operates their lock and they have no other materials.

The treasure chest is hinged and there is a ring on the base part of the chest and a clasp on the lid of the chest that fits over the ring when the box is closed such that locks can be placed on the ring preventing the chest from opening.

One of the friends has a jewel, and he needs to get it to his friend on the other island. There is a pirate that will transport anything between the two islands, but he will keep anything that is valuable or useful to him. This means that he will keep any accessible keys, and accessible locks that are not locked, any jewels, and any treasure chests that are not locked.

How can the friend with the jewel get the jewel to his friend on the other island?

the first friend sends the locked chest over containing the jewel, then the other friend sends his locked chest over containing nothing, then the friend sends the locked chest back with the key that dosnt work in that key hole, and since the key dosnt work , the pirate dosnt want it?

I infer from the original post that the pirate would keep the key regardless of its current usefulness......

I think the first guy should ship himself in the unlocked chest while he holds on to the key....then when the pirate opens the chest, he can throw the lock at him, striking the pirate in the head, commandeer the ship and sail over to hang out with the other stranded guy.

If I come up with a better solution I'll be sure to post it. :)

I think this somehow relates to the guy with a Fox, and Chicken, and some Seed, and a small boat riddle.

but i still think the pirate would just rob them both

Its like the Fox and Chicken and Seed story.

The fox, chicken, and seed are all on side on a river. You are a person trying to get all 3 of em to the other side.

You cant put the Fox and chicken on the same side because the fox will eat the chicken.

You cant put the Chicken and the seed on the same side because the chicken will eat them.

Ex: You take the fox to the other side first, you left the chicken and seeds together, You lose.

I think the riddle is similar to this. Can anyone guess this one also?

for this you bring the fox and chicken over on the same boat but only leave the fox behind. Return with the chicken to pick up the seed. Leave the chicken on the island and bring the seed to the fox. Then return to get your chicken and when you return you have all three on the same island.

Fox, Chicken, Seed, all on the same side of a river, the boat will only hold you and ONE other item, the fox will eat the chicken if left alone, the chicken will eat the seed, if left alone.

1st ... take chicken over, fox doesn't eat seed
2nd... Go back empty
3rd... take fox Over to the side the chicken is on
4th... take the Chicken over to the orginal side, to save it from the fox
5th... leave the chicken and take the seed over to the fox
6th... go back empty
7th... take the chicken and you have all three on the oppisite side

Ok, this solution requires an assumption that may not be valid. If you cal fit one of the locks through the hole in the clasp (the hole that the ring would go through)....then I have a solution (but it requires more assumptions).

Guy with no jewel locks his lock around the ring but with the clasp undone....thus the chest can be opened, but it cannot be locked properly. The pirate won't want the chest because it's effectively locked open. The guy with the jewel places the jewel inside and locks his lock between the other guy's lock and the clasp. The chest is locked now using the two locks. The first guy can unlock his lock, effectively unlocking the chest and can take out the jewel. He can then send the chest back to the other guy who can remove his lock and have a perfectly good treasure chest to use again.

I'm not sure if these assumptions are valid.....anybody know?

Also I wonder if the hinges have any meaning to it? Could the guy replace a hinge with a key and trick the pirate???

The lock around the lock solution? That's my preferred....so I hope it's the right one. But there's the key in the hinge one....

Well, I guess my real preferred solution is stealing the pirate's boat, but my guess is he's a pirate for a reason, so maybe not the easiest thing to do. :bandit:

Screw it. When the pirate comes over to pick you up, poke his other eye out and throw him over the boat. Then you can take whatever you want across.
