Volvo's S60R: The Performance Car, with Intelligence

The unique "Four-C" active chassis ready for the road
Irvine, CA (July 4, 2002) - Blistering seat of the pants driving,...razor sharp handling,...exhilarating acceleration,...in a Volvo? Yes! Volvo's new S60R brings high-tech, horsepower and safety into a complete performance sedan. Who else but Volvo could provide performance without compromising the legendary safety and comfort for which the Swedish manufacturer's cars are renowned? First, there was Volvo's Performance Concept Car (PCC), which presented an exciting glimpse into the future of high-performance driving. And now, the future is here. The production version of the PCC, the Volvo S60R, is an intelligent, high-performance car featuring an adaptive active chassis, a 300-horsepower engine, Servotronic Steering, powerful Brembo brakes, and a Haldex electronically controlled all-wheel-drive.

Redefining the Concept of a Performance Car
Highlighting the versatility of the S60R's driving experience are three active chassis settings: Comfort, Sport and Advanced Sport. Being behind the wheel, "Performance On Demand" is literally at the drivers' fingertips,...the epitome of dynamic safety. This duel functionality is unlike any other sport sedan currently available. Comfort provides a luxurious ride without compromising the S60R's outstanding control over any road surface. Sport, the default suspension setting for the S60R, provides optimum performance during normal but sporty driving. Advanced Sport transforms the Volvo S60R into an uncompromising sports sedan, prioritizing maximum driving pleasure.

Four-C Technology
The Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept, aptly called Four-C, employs seven electronic sensors to collect data on the movement of the car, adjusting shock valve damping almost instantaneously, based on driving style and road conditions. The Continuously Controlled Chassis Concept of the Volvo S60R is one of the most advanced chassis on the market, measuring data input five hundred times per second - that's every other millisecond.

300 hp and 295 ft/lbs of torque
Under the hood of the Volvo S60R is a turbocharged 2.5 liter, 5-cylinder engine, which provides 300 hp and 295 ft/lbs of torque at 2,100 rpm, propelling the car to 155 mph (electronically limited). Two transmissions will be offered: an all-new compact 6-speed manual gearbox, developed by Volvo Cars, and a 5-speed Geartonic semiautomatic, which allows full automatic or manual gear selection. Equally up to the task of bringing all of this fun to a safe stop are the four-piston Brembo brakes with aluminum calipers to help reduce heat buildup. Anti-lock brakes, traction control and Volvo's Dynamic Stability Control System (DSTC) are all standard on the S60R. The high-tech S60R represents the next level of active and passive safety, in a performance vehicle. The Volvo S60R will debut at the Paris Motor Show on September 26, 2002. A wagon version, the Volvo V70R based on the same technology, will be unveiled at the same time. Scheduled to start production in early 2003, the S60R will be built at Volvo's factory in Ghent, Belgium. The V70R will be built at the Torslanda plant in Sweden. Both models will be limited production.

i don't know dude about you, but i get to drive a lot of volvos. they are worse than buicks: comfy, they look like the knobs and buttons are planted on a sheet of cardboard, no feel of the car, very slow (the accord feels faster ), i don't see too much involvement in a car like that. maybe they are cool for the second age ppl but not for me. as for the exterior styling

I'm speechless.. I drove an s40 and got to ride in a s80 and both were nice.. In both cases, spirited driving was involved.. And I must say the volvo held pretty strong..

I guess its an acquired taste.. better acquire it as fast as you can!

the only upscale car maker that i really like is the BMW then it's Acura. allt the other cars seem too much luxury for me. i might have some loose screws, no doubt about that, but a luxury car, it's not my type.

i must agree volvos' aren't what they appear to be. I had an s80 for 2 weeks last time I was in Cali. It seemed fine, power was there, seats were ALRIGHT but thats just about where it stopped.

the layout inside leaves something to be desired. They have some door thingy made out of plastic that makes the console look like shit. Then they have a blacked out area around the rear view mirror mount (to help with viewing the mirror when driving into the sun) well for a tall person it cuts out some much needed viewing area.

Now i will say the car felt solid on the road, took her up to about 100mph and she felt good. But in the city where turning radius is needed forget it. The s80 is horrible with U-turns and in parking alots. Where my rl would make the turn with room to spair, i couldn't make it with the s80.

then theres the trunk, i have never hated a trunk on a car like i now do. The volvo idea about having a "electronic" handle is horrible. Until you figure it out you have no idea your ment to hold this plasticy peace above the rear plate. Then theres how do you unlock it? well if the cars unlocked then theres no problem because the trunks unlocked to. try to fit the key into the consealed hole beside this "electronic handle" adn well you could be there all day (as you can't see it if your above 3feet tall).

One thing I will give Volvo is that they are doing alot better then they used to be. But their cars are over priced for what you get, the fully loaded s80 runs for more money then the 3.5Rl and hands down the rl is a nicer car. tranny is good though.

Volvo is making big leaps with their cars but they have a long way to come. I would take a volvo over a NA car but not over a nissa or honda/acura. Japs just know how to make cars.

btw i wish people would stop using "S" or "R" to say the car is fast. Only a few car companies used this term before it was OVER USED. I know Honda was one of the first, other people should create their own. Followers suck

Between BMW and Benz, to me it seems as if Benz sets the standard and BMW tries to get there..

BTW, the new 745 is fugly.

I was never a big Volvo fan and am not really now either.
But I like the type of cars that are luxury and fast.
EX. 3.2 TL - Type S
or 3.2 (or is it 2.3?!?) CL - Type S 6 Speed.
That kind of stuff.
Now the Lexus IS300 and the M3/M5 are really nice too.
You get my idea.

To each their own. I'm just glad it's theirs, not mine.

Bad turning radius? That sucks man.

I've got an '88 240 DL (Big Bertha), and she turns on a dime. My Accord has the turning radius of a frikkin aircraft carrier. I'm not sure of the turning radius of a new Yukon, but it seems tighter than my Honda. And the new A4 and 330 both turn nicely.
