has anyone around here repaired both drive axles on a 95 civic dx? i am looking at doing it myself, as i have a fair (but no where near expert nor am i a mechanic) amount of car know how. it was estimated that the cost of replacing both at a shop would be $460. i am considering the possibility of doing it myself and replacing them w/ rebuilt parts as i think it would be significantly cheaper and i think i can do it myself. also, what repair manuals do most people around here like for 95 civics? i have a haynes manual but it doesn't give me as much detail as i'd like. any help would be appreciated. thanks.

do u want to repair the drive axles or replace them ? replacing them is cheaper. the replacemet is straight forward. remove the steering knukle nuts, remove the tierod nut and then separate them with a balljoint remover. tap a bit on the end of the axle after removing the nut and the steering knukle should come right off. now you are ready to remove the axle

the problem is that the cv boots are going and i'm concerned the joints are shot or are going bad (cracks in the rubber). i don't really want to bother inspecting them, i'd rather just replace the entire shafts w/ new units and be done w/ it. i moved from upstate new york where they salt the roads like you wouldn't believe in the winter, to the hot as hell summers of southern california. i'd like the reassurance that the joints are going to fail on me. btw, anyone know what kind of safety issues driving on a possibly bad joint (that may or may not go out) is? thanks.
