LONDON, England -- Queen Elizabeth II has said she looks back "with measured pride" at her 50-year reign.

In a keynote speech marking the climax of the Golden Jubilee celebrations she reflected on her 50 years as monarch.

She said: "It has been a pretty remarkable 50 years by any standards -- there have been ups and downs.

"But anyone who can remember what things were like after those long six years of war appreciates what immense changes have been achieved since then.

"Not everyone has been able to benefit from the growth of wealth and prosperity but it has not been for lack of political will.

"I think we can look back with measured pride on the last 50 years."

She caused laughter when she said she was aware that there was some interest in football at the moment -- a reference to the World Cup.....

....On Monday night a similar number thronged the street around Buckingham Palace while a lucky audience of 12,000 saw the cream of the pop world give a special concert. (Full story)

"We feel proud of you; proud and grateful for everything you have done for your country and the Commonwealth over 50 extraordinary years," her son and heir Prince Charles said in an emotional tribute after the concert.

The Queen is a spiritual center for the United Kingdom. It's like having a president you really like for life now, since all of the govt. part is now handled by the House of Commons and the House of Lords and the PM, very much like we do. The Royals don't make law, but they influence, and 90% of the time in the right way, I'd say.

BTW, we as Americans really don't get to diss the Crown...some houses over there are older than this hemisphere.

Sure, the US spends billions each year keeping up monuments and institutions that are a source of pride and patriotistm but don't do much else. Upkeep of the monarchy is similar, except it also provides leaders with a long-term view of the commonwealth and a slight ability to direct its direction.

IMO I think the US would benefit from a low-power but long-term leadership. Politicians with 2,4,6 yr terms focus too much on politics and not enough on our long-term good.
