Me and my wife were talking today. And we came up with an idea we both really like the idea of... Just wanted to bounce it off everyone here, and see if anyone has gone up this avenue before.

We're thinking about starting our own bussiness. A florist Shop. Neither one of us really likes our jobs right now. She has no clue what she wants to be when she grows up, and I'm studing engineering and I like that. But we never get to spend any time together. And owning a store together would be the perfect solution.

Theirs property right next door, we could buy, build and use. and thiers NO florist in our town or the two towns next to us. She loves plants and flowers and things, and I can Tolerate them  I'm thinking I can get the land and Have it built for $50,000 or under. Then we would just need all the fun stuff. I already have an Investment Broker, who speciality is small bussiness'. I'm going go talk to him tommorow. We could basicly spend All day together. Everyday :D.

My main question is does anyone have any clue how much a small florist shop can produce in a year?? right now we're both Making about 50k a year. And I think we would need to make about 60 if we did this, to stay a float. That's not alot right. 60k a year for a small bussiness.

Well I'm willing to take any suggestions or advice on the subject as well !

:D No my wife is not grown up ... what are you crazy .. gesh.. do you think I would marry a grown up

Well thier are two local flower distributors in my area.. found em in the phone book.. so we can hopefully use both.

Really the whole purpose of the bussiness is for us to spend all this time together... I personally wouldn't care if it were flowers or hotdogs.. Our relationship is solid..

That's a good point.. Its a small town, so i'm not sure if thier was one before us... Maybe I can find some old phone books. It's a small town, but i'm really thinking location is good, becuase it's right on a main road, and it's a very busy road.

I got mad research to do , but i'll keep everyone updated !

Well, you need to do a lot more research into the florist market, etc. before you jump in. Secondly, you both make $50k, meaning $100k combined? I'm not sure you'll be able to do that right away, especially while paying off loans, etc. I'm also thinking that $50k to build might be shooting too low, but maybe not in Maryland. How big of a town/city do you live in?

Also, you said you're studying engineering, so am I. What branch? How would you have the time to open a floral shop while doing this? I get up early and go to bed at 2 or so every night... and I don't take too many breaks in the middle. I can't see myself taking on a whole new life in addition to this...
edit: I forgot you're already working, so obviously you have time.

I'd get your degree, and go from there. Depending on what branch of engineering you're doing, you can and will make much more money doing that. Also, do you really want to spend all day, every day, with her? ;)

:paranoid: Gesh have you all been scarred for life in some bad relatioinship.. I want to spend all day Every day with her ! Here's a better break down on the land were thinking about... we live on a strech of route 1 .. anyone on the East coast knows what route one is .. i think it goes from florida to maine.. anyway .. we live in the boondock-ish part that you can do 90mph down with no chance of a cop.. Their is our house and 5 other houses on this road in a stretch of about a quarter mile.. all built around 1960.. well the 3 across the street have been well maintained. all brick fronts.. small houses.. but nice... Our house, has been maintainted pretty decent, but still needs some work. The two house next to us.. well... they haven't been lived in for quite some time... in addition thier is a small cinder block construction builder next to the second house. the building looks to have been burnt down at one point in time. We're thinking about buying all the land knocking down the two houses, and re-vamping the cinderblock building to be the Florist shop.. Total it's probably .5-.75 of an acre... Already checked on one property the land it's self is worth $5.. probly about $10-15K all together.

The reason I say $50 to get it all running is cuase I know EVERYONE in the TRADE.. I work at home Depot.. I had my whole house carpeted for $60 and a case of beer. I know how to get what i will need cheap.. and I know how to get a lot of the labor cheaper.. or sometimes.. for the price of a case of beer.

Another reason this will be good for me.. is right now .. those houses next door are bringing my property value down. .. (which is how i bought the house so cheap) so knocking those down and putting a respectable bussiness there, will increase my property value for both the land and structures. So if I do lose the farm on this venture.. least i'll get more for the farm.
