Body Kit Quality

Here is the three types of material bodykits are made from. They are in order from cheapest and poorest quality to the more expensive and best quality.

1. Sprayed fiberglass: Extremely inexpensive, paint adheres well to fiberglass. It is most prone to imperfections but can be modified and customized. It handles ordinary everyday driven abuse poorly.

2. Hand layed fiberglass: More expensive, paint adheres well to it. Also the fitment is better. I still has small imperfections, but can be modified and customized, can easily handle everyday driven abuse and much more.

3. Poly Urethane: Most expensive, paint does not adhere well to surface, good fitment with little imperfections, modification is extremely difficult. Can possible sag and droop in time. Can handle high levels of abuse.

Most of the replica kits on the market today are sprayed fiberglass. Thats why they are so inexpensive and usually have fitment problems.

Buyer beware when you purchase a kit. Just because it is cheaper never means it is better. Always go and touch the kit and see how thick it is. Nothing is worse then ordering a kit and thinking you got a deal when it shows up at your doorstep and it is paper thin. I have seen some kits that literally flap a little when driving. That will just lead to cracks down the road. Just a little advice. :)

True, when buying a kit-make sure you know the differences in materials. This will save you in the long run. Be sure to check the credability of the shop your buying from.

I say it's a good idea to stay away from copy kits. They have to be modified from the original version, which basically means it's gonna need modifying for it to fit the car. I got the erebuni shogun front for my car and it fits like a dream. It had some minore imperfections, but the body shop took care of that. say the brands to buy include kaminari,VIS racing, ground designs for honda guys, wings west,tsunami, and if you don't have a tight budget, bomex or veilside. Bomex and veilside are supposed to be supreme to all the other manufacturers as far as durability and lack of imperfections, but the price shows. http://members.aol.com/thebandfleenor/steve_sig2.jpg

dont forget C-West, they are some of the best kits out there. fitment seems better than even stock - beware of knockoffs of this kit, cuz the real thing will run you upwards of $1000.

Actually...the thickness of the fiberglass itself is not a good way to tell the quality of the kit. Sure, a cheap kit will be thin. But honestly....the thick kits usually have too much extra resin thrown on. This does not add to the strength of the kit at all....the quality of the fiberglass is what is important to a durable body kit...

go to www.asylumms.com and get yourself a neoflex kit, they say its better than urethane and with the paint sticking properties of fiberglass........or something like that. im thinking of ordering one of the lip pieces just to check it out :)

if you have the $ Poly Urethane is the way to go. it's worth the extra that you put out.

bt by all means of yu find a good deal on a kit and you dont drive and tear on your ride then fibergalss will last and hold up for you....:yes: ;)

body kits dont really do anything for regular daily driving. just add style. performance body kits when racing make the car go faster by cutting through the air or redirecting it.
if anything body kits on a daily driver may make you more cautious depending on how close to the ground they are cause you dont want to scrape the ground and break one off... thats for sure. :no:

I see. So they are okay for daily driving, and they definetly look cool and personalize your car. But that stuff that bonds the kit to your car ( i forget what its called ) does it last forever or ware off or what?

anyone know of any other JDM kit makers other than Bomex, C West, Veilside...im lookin for a kit for my 01 prelude...wanted something JDM but not many JDM companys offer anything for the Prelude...anyone ever hear of AB Flug, D Speed, R Magic...all are JDM companies but i don't even know where to begin to look for kits from these companies

just look carefully, check out the JDM sites and ask them whats available and what they can get.

Anyone know a good place to get the black widow kit? Im trying to find one in urethane so that i can rest assured that it will last. I heard that the kit isnt offered in this material, is hand layed fiberglass much of a difference?

I got the Z1 Boxer from store.dragracing.com handlayered fiberglass for 549. what's a good brand of bondo for sealing up small gaps between the kit and the body?

btw, i ordered the black widow, but they said people were complaining about fitment problems, so they asked if i would rather have the z1 boxer. looks almost exactly the same. fits good except the side skirts have a gap towards the back where the frame hits the indentation on the skirt :confused: . oh well, once i get the bondo it should be perfect.
