I'm going to be changing my oil in a couple of days and I'm wondering what the best oil to use is. So far I've been using Chevron's oil, very cheap. Just basic stuff. I've heard that there are better oils out there that can improve the cars performance and gas milage. Is this true? If so what are the best kinds and their approx. cost?

Mobil 1 fully synthetic oil is a good way to go.

mobil one full synth. improves gas mileage slightly. not much on performance. (you won't notice it)
get a good filter on there too. not sure what everyone here uses. someone fill in that one.

BDC wrote a huge article on Puralator 1 oil filters (do a search), and he convinced me.
Maxvla, how does good oil improve gas mileage? I've never heard this before, so I'm just curious.

engine runs smoother so there is less power waste.
less friction leads to more work done per stroke. you do the math.
may give you another 1/2mile per gallon. but think... that 1/2 mile might be the diff in your engine dying in the middle of the road or you safely pulling into your local shell.

So good oil would really drop the coefficient of friction low enough to get another 1/2mpg? If so, wouldn't there be a more significant power gain (speaking efficiency here)?

maxvla is right wit the oil. about power gains no. and a good oil is not about how well greases the engine so the friction coefficent will be less. a good oil should be able to withstand high temperatures without thermally breaking down. another important quality of the oil is the detergency (don't know if the term exists in english: the power to clean the engine). i will talk to one of my friends who worked for an engine oil company and post it up here.

So you're saying Maxvla is right, but it doesn't increase gas mileage or give you power? I know a good oil lubricates well...
BTW, I'm not saying you guys are wrong, just trying to figure this out. :)

Not to say you can't gain HP. Royal Purple does give you gains. However, who can notice a couple HP?

i did say that it will improve the gas mileage but i also said that the hp won't be affected, or in my case the gas yardage.
