Well its finally available for pre-order.

This is a great move on Sony's part. This should help extend the life of the PS2. The kit they sell will add the ability to network your computer & connect to the internet via DSL/cable.

Here's what's in the kit:
Internal hard disc drive (for PlayStation 2) (HDD) with a 40 GB capacity
Network Adaptor (Ethernet) (for PlayStation 2) 10/100 Base-T Ethernet interface
Computer Monitor Cable (for PlayStation 2) (with audio connectors)
USB Keyboard and Mouse (for PlayStation 2)
Linux (for PlayStation 2) version 1.0 software distribution on 2 DVD-ROM Discs
- DISC 1 contains the Runtime Environment and the PlayStation 2 System Manuals and is Sony Computer Entertainment Copyright material.
- DISC 2 contains the Software Packages to be installed. This is the main Linux distribution. Each software package has its own license.

Wonder if Microsoft will venture into something like this? Likely not a Linux based system, but perhaps a Windows CE system?

I heard about this a looong time ago it's going to be freaking awesome. I think Sony is trying to take over our lives. They want the ps2 to be the center of our entertainment systems, now they want it to be our computer, next they'll slab some usb cables on a portable stove and a mini-fridge...

Wow, that's pretty crazy. So will that kit also enhance gaming by allowing you to save to the hd, multiplayer with the broadband, etc?

No the HD that's included will only allow for Linux & programs to be run. To actually save stuff to the drive from games you would need a different drive. Currently though no PS2 games use the hard drive.

Yeah, that's one thing that I like about the Xbox. I have the PS2 though, and to me it has the best games of all consoles right now.

What do you guys think of the $200 price tag? Even though you get a whole lot, I think I'd have a hard time spending that on my PS2.
