Hi, seems like my 99 Civic has something wrong with the fuel light. It does not turns on on low fuel, I've put 11.8 gallons of gas (so it was empty) and the light never turned on. How can I test if it is the bulb in the dash or the thing that goes into the tank that is broken?
I've notice that the tank has a three wire connector, can I make the light turn on by shorting or doing something with that connector or should I take the dash appart and check the bulb? How can I test both parts (dash and tank part)?

Funny thing you should ask! I was just telling a co-worker about that today.
I don't think the low fuel indicator on my 2000 CiViC is working either.
Gonna have to check into it -- thought it was just my imagination...

On the weekend I checked the bulb and the bulb is O.K. So there must be something wrong with the other parts (into the tank). Or it takes much more gas than it says on the manual (12 gal or around 45L). I don't want to drive until I run out of gas just to check. My 1990 Accord had the same problem, it worked sometimes, but my wife's 1989 LXi Accord was working perfectly, great car by the way, we didn't want to sell it but my sister got it and she's happy with it.
So how can I test this?

you can put a small gas can in the trunk and run the car until it runs completely out then you'll know for sure.

I took the meter (name?) out of the tank and it seems it is broken. I tested the light by grounding the contact on the meter (part that goes into the tank) and dash light worked O.K. So I need a new part but I think it's not worth it just for the light.

Could this be repaired or do I need a new meter (the whole part)?

I'm not sure seems like this is a common problem with Hondas the Accord I had had the same problem and I've read of quite a few having the same problem.

I always wondered the same thing about my 97 Civic when I had it. I've seen it come on once in the 7 years I owned it. I ran it REALLY low several times and never did see the light kick on, but I never ran it completely out. Thanks for the info, I'll let my friend who bought it know about it.

More details would be great.. What method are you using to check the code? If they check engine light isn't on, why are you trying to check the codes?
