First of all, let me just say that I am NOT planning on copying anything that isn't mine. I just want legit backups of the games I already have. With that said...

Is there any way to create backups of PS2 discs WITHOUT a mod chip or console modification? It seems really odd to me that with all of the disc duplication software out there I still can't get a copy of my games without cracking the console open. I mean...all of these programs advertise "exact copies" but then make a little note about you still needing a chip. What gives?

Discuss.

its something on the actual disc, so no, you need a chip.

The thing is, I don't understand how it can get around decryption software. I mean...a program like DVD Decrypter will decrypt any decryption algorythms that exist, so how can it still remain encrypted. Unless Sony has some sort of proprietary technology that randomly generates code within the disc itself, I just don't see how it's possible. And even then, wouldn't the disc duplication software duplicate the random code generation?

i dont know this for sure, but since the sony discs are different color than your run of the mill burn discs perhaps the ps2 knows this and wont run the ps2 games software unless it recognizes the color reflected back from the disc, when you mod it, you remove this "feature" and it reads anything. i know xbox issimilar to that, with burnt music cd's & dvd's at least
