iPodShuffle problems

Ok I don't want to hear your opinions about iPodweather you like them or not. So if you got something shitty to say. Shut your mouth.

Anyway........ I got an iPodShuffle for a gift. I installed all the software to my computer fine. Everything seems to be working fine...well not everything...When I put the songs on to the iPod it reads it as empty still. I then took out my iPod and went to sleep. I woke up and plugged my iPod into my USB port and clicked on the iPod. It says there are songs on them. I clicked on the songs and they play onto my computer. I then took the iPod to my friends lap top and plugged it into his USB port. All the songs play just fine. But they won't play in the head phones. There is a light on the front of the shuffle that blinks green to amber saying there are no songs on the iPod. But when I put it into a computer. There is. Do I have to convert songs to iTunes? If so. How do I do that?

Yeah...I'd return it. It doesn't sound like a software problem (which is astoundingly lucky) since the songs are there and will play on computers and whatnot. Doesn't sound like an interface problem because...well...the little light's telling you it's empty. My guess is that there's a bug somewhere in the hardware. Maybe a command line glitch or something that's keeping it from accessing the songs to know that they're there. Either contact Apple's tech support or just retun the damn thing and exchange it for one that (hopefully) works. It's a long shot to find a fully functional one, but here's to hoping.

well, from what little I know of iPod's (and I try to know as little as possible, but I guess I'll leave the iPod bashing out of this post, haha), they want music in their own proprietary format. Proprietary format = DRM = they control how you listen to your music.

My guess is you plugged the iPod in, and dragged and dropped MP3's onto it via an Explorer window? yeah that won't work. What you've done is put data on there that it has no idea how to handle. It is essentially in solid state storage mode.

Most likely, you'll have to use iTunes to convert your music files into whatever format Apple likes (I think its AAC, but I really don't know).

What I would suggest though, is that you do not convert all your music to that and delete your MP3's, etc. iTunes stuff is all about the digital rights management, which basically removes all your rights to your music. Read the end user agreement VERY carefully, and they basically tell you they will do whatever they want to in the future as far as how you can play your music.

That may also be the case, but using a proprietary format is bullshit. I'm pretty sure iPods will play MP3 format despite their inherent shittiness, but if you have to convert everything to an iTunes format, what's the fucking point? Using AAC would effectively destroy the iPod's marketability simply because 98% of it's users are far too stupid to comprehend audio conversion. A friend of mine had the same problem with a regular iPod...it worked for a while and then just stopped recognizing that it had songs on it. I still say return the fucker. If you have the same problem next time, it's time for a refund because any company that uses a proprietary format is full of shit and doesn't deserve any money...period. Proprietary software solely exists to cover one company's bottom line. That is to say "if you don't use our software, you can't use our product". That's fucking bullshit. Fuck iPods, fuck Apple, and fuck MP3 players in general.

i completely agree. but i wouldn't put it past Apple to require proprietary formats. The rest of them are doing it. notice how WMA has become the standard for music sites elsewhere? It's all so they can apply DRM to it. MP3 (in its current state) and Vorbis don't have any provisions for DRM.

Since I have no experience with Apple's products, maybe an RMA is in order.

As for blind and GT. Yeah I did just drop and drag the songs. THen I formatted my iPod last night and started ALL over. I went to my iTunes and went to export library. All it does is transfer over a file called library.txt or library.itl it doesn't actually physically transfer any songs over. So that is where i'm at.

Wait...you returned 2 or 3 different iPod Shuffles and didn't get something else after...say...the second time? They're pieces of shit, plain and simple. Get something else. I suppose if you really wanted to you could go online and find a program to convert all the songs you want over to AAC (if that is, in fact, what they use), but good luck on that waste of time. Seriously...return it and get something else. Something that works. Something that's not Apple.

I read the manuel 2 times and skimmed it once. I didn't not return it 3 times. I got it as a gift just a bit ago. I never tried returning it once. This is the first time i've tried doign anything with it.

I'm not sure how much those shuffles go for, but I do know they are the cheapest ipod apple sells (no screen -- wtf). If you can convince whoever bought it for you to give you the receipt, you could return it for a model that may not be defective (if it is defective, maybe it's just stupid). OR return it for store credit and buy other stuff. OR try to get some money out of it and invest in a Cowon iAudio U2 1GB mp3 player. This thing owns. So iTunes doesn't transfer your music to the player? I seriously think it does. As annoying as I'm going to sound, sit down with the manual to the ipod, and read allllll about it. take it with you in the shitter. Specifically look to what it says about transfering music to it from a PC. Maybe there is a certain folder it has to go into, or maybe it needs some sort of index file.

There is a utility on apple.com that lets you reset your ipod and upgrade the firmware. Worked for me when my shuffle started acting up on May.

No problems now.

BTW you dont need a screen. When you consider the amount of time the item is used and the amount of time you actually look for a song via the screen its a small percentage. For the price/memory size you just skip to the next song.

In my opinion, if I'm going to drop a hundred bucks for a 1gb mp3 player, I want an effing screen. BUt I suppose if having the apple logo emblazoned on it in place of a functional screen is seen as better by the general populace, whatever. Not me.

kwik you're not suppose to export your library.. i don't remember how I put songs on my ipod (did this a on christmas of '04) but that's not how you do it.. and also everyone should stop talking shit on iPods.. I've had mine for a while and the only reason it doesn't function completely perfect is because it got SOAKED in the rain because I left my moonroof open.. but guess what, it still works.. In fact they're only one button that no longer works.
