ok so i just bought a 30gb ipod video and i'm very tempted to take it back.

i've only used it twice now.

I charged it fully the first time and i got about 3.5-4hours use of it then the battery died. that was it.

Then i charged it fully again and this time the battery lasted about 4-5 hours.

The salesdude AND the website says the battery should last about 14hours but it will deteriate after a few months or a year or so.

so, do you guys think I got a faulty Ipod and I should take it back? or will i end up exchanging it and having the same "problem" with this lack of battery run time?

Nah man you got a functional iPod. The advertised battery life is only for play at the lowest volume, lowest contrast, no LED, no skipping/ff/reversing songs what so ever, shit like that. When I bought my mini a few years I had the thoughts..but that mini, along with my GF's nano and my dad's video has shitty battery life (compared to what was advertised).

Your only bet is a Shuffle my friend. I think the advertised battery life was like 18-20, but it gets up to 8 hours on a charge cycle..which is pretty good compared to all its siblings with the fancy screens.

The battery drains a little if you don't use the thing for extended periods of time.

Man...from the beginning iPods have been plagued with battery problems. After a year or two the batteries usually just stop working...period. And I don't know about the newer models, but the old ones had internal batteries that couldn't be changed, so you basically had to pitch your $300 piece of junk. We started selling MP3 players at work a little while before X-mas (we sell iPods and another player from Creative) and I'm ALWAYS steering people away from iPods. They're more expensive, have shitty, glitchy software, and they're nowhere near worth what they cost (I'm not a huge fan of Creative's software in general...in fact I downright loathe it. But ANYTHING is better than Apple's software). If you can live without being hip and cool and having the "iPod" name, just get a generic MP3 player. Chances are it'll work better and probably cost about 1/2 of what the iPod does.

I think ipods rock. They wouldnt be the #1 mp3 player if they were so shitty. Granted they do have good marketing.

As for yoru battery issue, you could try to replace it though I think you're going to get the same results. My shufle plays great, had it since it came out with no battery issues that you speak of.

I must get 12-14 hours of play out of it though. Try not blasting your ears and see what battery life you get out of it. IMO people listen to their music to louod. ASk someone beside you if they can hear what you're listening to, if they can you have it too loud.

i've never had a problem with my iPod's battery life, but then again I've almost always had it connected to something charging it when I listen to it (like in my car)

My friend needed his G2 ipod's battery replaced and the apple store wanted like $75 for the battery and $25 to install it - they will not just sell the battery...
Other than that, it seemed to last ok...

I say take it back and tell them the issue, maybe your batt is faulty?

(If you do decide "f*ck ipod" you should look at an iaudio x5l instead)

Look around, there are tons of gadget shops out there selling generic batteries and installing it for cheap...but this wouldn't be a smart option until your warranty expires.
