One of my friend just got a new Mustang. I actually love the look. But still the performance isn't there.

Another slow car on the road with racing stripes...

The main thing I don't like about the mustangs is that John Q Public can't tell the 160hp models from the 360hp ones. To the untrained eye, they all look the same...

Nevertheless, grats on your buddies new car. :)

awww he got the crap version? Too bad...
Still...they do look great (well w/o the stripes)

The stripes look good.. it's part of their whole retro spinoff of the GT350s.

It's easier than it used to be. The GTs have 4 headlights instead of 2 and they have different wheels (there's only 1 V6 wheel, but 2 V8 wheels). Back in the mid 90s you had to look at the hood, of all things. Tiny hood openings meant a V6, slightly bigger ones meant V8, and retardedly big ones meant Cobra.

I could do without the racing stripes...but all in all I love those cars. I like them even more in person.

Yeah...high 13s bone stock is slow.

They run high 13s stock? I thought they kept the same powertrain?

GT40FIED
01-31-2005, 11:53 PM
Nope. The GTs have a 300hp 3V SOHC 4.6L. They also have a Ford version of Vtec (I forget what they're calling it). The suspension is a radical redesign, too. The car's only serious problem is it's weight. With driver (of average weight) it's only 100lbs or so shy of 2 tons. But I guess that's what you get when you make a rock solid car.

Wren57
02-01-2005, 12:13 AM
Holy crap... 3900 pounds?!? That means it's luggin 13lbs/1hp... gearing must be tall or something if it can hit high 13s. Have you see/heard of it being done or is that just mags?

GT40FIED
02-01-2005, 12:52 AM
Yeah...I've heard of it...haven't seen it done. most of the early mag reports were way off because Ford reps would ride along. That added weight and people were afraid to really jump on it. Since then I've read/heard about high 13s. The gearing is so-so...and I've heard of a Ford-denied "adult supervision" programming on the drive-by-wire throttle setup that for some reason doesn't let the car really move when you mash the throttle. All of the cars I've heard of and read about hitting 13s have had their computers reflashed to take care of the throttle issue (all of the problem cars were either pre-release or VERY early deliveries). The gearing is actually pretty good. I'd really like to try out one of the 5spd automatics.

I only find those 5.0s sexy for some odd reason. I like the body of the Saleen though. I have this friend with a car that looks similar to it..red with white stripes, only his is a little older. Those stripes look goofy.

As for the new GT. I never did look into specs for Mustangs, but I do hear that the GT is "slow." Is that like, a stereotype now? Bone stock high 13s!? That's like, equivelant to the SRT4. Nutso. GT = N/A stock, right?

Btw, excuse my lack of knowledge on Mustangs, or any "American" car for that matter. Sure, I could look it up and read all night...but hey, I thought it's about damn time I learm something car related on HST. ;)

Sure...it'll be like the technology sharing companies have. I'll teach you about domestics, and you can fill me in on imports (the little I don't already know, anyway).

By the way, does anyone know if Honda does a tech share program? I know Ford lends some of it's technology to tuner companies like Steeda, Saleen, Livernois Motorsports, and Sean Hyland Motorsports and gets feedback from said companies and uses it to improve performance. Does Honda (or any import company) do anything like that?

Anyone that says the new GT is slow doesn't know what they are talking about. As far as I am concerned the GT is what I consider baseline model. Just wait until the new cobra comes out.. that thing is going to be fun as shit to drive. I gotta get myself over to the dealership to test drive one... and yes the mustang does high 13s.. even if the magazine claims it, you can figure it will do at least that, even if the conditions have to be perfect.

And you act surprised that a 8cyl car with 300 horsepower of american muscle is as fast as a dodge neon 4 cyl...

This is true. I've noticed over the years that the bigger mags like Motor Trend and Car & Driver always get slower times than enthusiast mags. Then people actually get ahold of the cars and improve on enthusiast mag times. Hell...even Motor Trend got a 5.1 0-60 time out of the new GT. Not insanely quick, but damn good for an almost 2 ton car.

I like the new GTs but I'd still take a '03-04 Cobra over one.:biting: There was a car lot around here selling one for $28,000.. :yikes:

As for the new GT... I want to drive one just to see how it compares to the last few models. I think it would be a blast to drive. They say it handles like a dream! I even read some magazines that say it may even be on par with BMW in the handling department. Thats fairly impressive.

yeah your right it's not slow I read some place on another fourm that people were getting high 14's with the new GT but a 13.9 is pretty fast and the 0-60 isn't so bad either 5.2 I like it... I think they look pretty sweet but the new Cobra is going to be hella faster....

Mopar was really cool. Now they just blow. Aside from a Ram SRT-10, I wouldn't touch anything they make. I saw they were bringing back the Charger (or the Challenger?) in a ridiculously generic body style. Then they were going to throw their 5.7L hemi into it, which is in half of the cars they make. Huzzah. But gimme a Hemi 'Cuda or an old 440 six pack Charger any day.

I have heard that the 426 hemi is going to be coming back .. they already make various reproduction hemi crate motors.

I seriously doubt that...at least as a production option. A crate motor, sure...but not in a production car. What would it go into (assuming Mopar doesn't have a new car we haven't yet seen)? It's way too big for anything they currently make. They could stick it in a truck, I suppose...but the original 426 hemis weren't what I'd call truck motors. I just don't think we'll see big blocks come back at all outside of trucks and the occassional limited production/exotic like the Viper or S7 (I'm not even sure if the Viper's V10 fits the "big block" definition).

Yeah, the new Mopars arnt as good as the old ones. You can ask Fatal i come from a diehard Mopar familiy. My dad has many old Mopars such as a 69 Charger which is his main drag car best tim eof a 7.73, and a 70 Duster, 69 Baracuda, 67 Dart.

Yeah...Mopar's big thing now is family stuff...mostly minivans and Durangos. The 300 and Magnum are last-ditch efforts to convince people they're still cool. It's not working.

Well hopefully the new charger will kick some ass. Here is a story about it.

Since there is no verified confirmation of an actual Charger, we can only guess about performance and cost. The first--performance--we have a little better idea. With a 345hp Hemi under the hood, a close-ratio automatic gearbox and weighing roughly 3,600 pounds, the Charger would be good for mid 13s in bone-stock trim at sea level. With good tires, gears, headers and an aftermarket exhaust, this could easily dip into the 12s. We would expect the Charger to be squarely in GTO territory, both in performance and price. That means an MSRP somewhere in the mid- to low-30s. If an entry-level 3.5L V-6 version (rental, taxi and police fleets) finds its way into the mix, we're looking at something in the Dodge Intrepid R/T range, both price-wise and performance-wise. Quarter-mile performance with a 242hp V-6 should be in the 15s with a price in the high 20s.

GT40FIED
02-01-2005, 10:16 PM
Well...GTO territory isn't anything special these days. Hell...an '03 Mach 1 beat a GTO on the strip...for less money, too. Dodge really needs to stop sticking the Hemi in everything. It's in cars, trucks, SUVs, and a station wagon. The only frontier left for their hemi is a minivan.

Ive seen pics of the new Charger... Its about as ugly as everything else Dodge makes. Seriously, its just another crappy car with what use to be a cool name in the car world. The name just doesn't make the car, IMO.

Hell look at the Impala. And does anyone remember what they turned the Nova into? It went from a badass muscle car to a four door compact POS.

Haha...touche. But you forgot the 80's abomination also called Charger. That hatchback fugly thing. Fuck...Shelby even slapped his name on there for a few years. Not what "performance" mods it had (if any). I'm sure it belted out a monstrous 140hp or something. Piece of shit. And what about those early-mid 90's Impala SS's? You know...where they took a Caprice, stamped "Impala SS" in the rear quarters, and dropped an LT1 into it. Those were actually quick cars...for luxobarges. Now if you want an SS from Chevy they just slap a blower on the stock motor and BAM...30 more hp.

Actually the '80-'81 models were worse when they ditched the 302 for 2 years and used a 255.

I dont even remember what the 80's chargers look like. :D My friend has a '96 Impala SS that has some suspension and engine work done. It hauls ass and rails well for a boat! Thats more of what an Impala should be like though given its history. If your gonna kill a legend, do it without disgracing it.
