View Full Version : question on the heart's valves

Why does the side of the heart that pumps blood through the entire body have only 2 flaps on the AV valve, when the side that only pumps blood around the lungs has 3?
Wouldnt the side that has 3 smaller flaps be more efficient?
(Both AV valves are equal in size.)

The pulmonary side (lungs) having the 3 flaps to the AV valve has more papillary muscles to prevent blood backflow (from ventrical to atrium). It seems silly because that side has less pressure to begin with, since blood only travels so far.
The circulatory side's ventrical is 4-5x the size of the pulmonaries...shouldnt it have more papillaries? Shouldnt it have 3 flaps to the valve?

Just curious

Pat...you've made the critical mistake that people here would actually want to think.:D

My take on it? It is what it is. Pondering it is an exercise in futility since there's nothing to be done to change it.

Ha for the most part GT your right on that one.
But Pat, I can't even being to answer that question. I tried to think of it, but i don't know enough about it to even make an educated guess.

I think it's the same reason we have 2 ears...to tell where a smell is coming from just like we can tell where sound is coming from with 2 ears. don't quote me on that though...lol, i'm just guessing.

But if it could work better, imagine the possibilities for things like a longer life and increased physical potential. Oh well Pat...at least your post got some responses...my last one got read but ignored.

^thats very true, but we're given a certain amount of time for a reason, no need in continuing over populating the earth with hybrid elders

Exactly my point. If people cared enough to think then they wouldn't care how long it was. I read it. My brain hasn't exploded yet. I'm proof positive that thinking can make a difference.
