I was driving my moms '02 jeep yesterday to pick up a bunch of drunk friends and the cel came on.
I just got around to checking the thing today (and its a lot easier to check it than mine) and it comes up P 0456. I search some jeep places and find out what that means....
LOOSE GAS CAP
WTF???? Thats the dumbest reason for a cel in the world! Big deal! Its not like the cap's gonna fall off...theres a door there. Its not like gas is going to spray out of the filler...theres a flap, the "loose" cap AND the door.
So now I have to take it to the dealership and have it cleared there, since I cant do it by removing the battery cable. HASSLE!!!
...just thought Id share my opinion.

That's actually insanely common. I'm not even sure why there's a light for it. Probably has something to do with tank pressurization. Either it's it's lame as shit. You might be able to clear it by unhooking the battery and leaving the key in the "acc on" position for about 15 minutes. That will usually clear it if unhooking the battery alone won't work. You'll just have to reset the clock and radio presets.
Speaking of worthless MILs (or CELs...whatever), a few weeks ago I was helping a friend work on his Mustang when we get a code for "bank 1 lean". WTF? There's 4 fucking cylinders in "bank 1". Dumb bastards. There are individual codes for different cylinders running lean or rich (which was the original problem), but no...I get a code for a whole damn side of the engine instead. Bullshit.

Yeah gt, I heard of the batt/key combo thing...tried it too.
Didnt work.
Its all because they wanted to use this stupid non-threaded gas cap pos. Whats wrong w/ a design that works??? These fango-mango caps are junk.

Actually, It's just a way to make money. They know that sooner or later that code will get thrown and 90% of people will go running to their dealerships to get the code cleared. That and, in the case of cars like Pdigg's, some ECUs can't be cleared in normal ways...you HAVE to have a shop do it.

My accord throws a CEL if the gas cap is loose.

I think its because if your tank isnt pressurized enough and you turn hard you might experience a lean condition on the engine or something like that.

gas shouldnt be under pressure i thought... i know most newer cars gas caps vent out when pressure is too high

No I mean so that it can be circulated and everything so the pump doesnt pump air. Not pressure like being compressed just enough to make it stay pressurized inside the tank
