Have you been driving the autobahn in Germany?

I have, actually. I was there when I was 16 a few weeks after I graduated from high school. Mind you I was driving a Volvo station wagon (our rental car) and it was only for about 20 or 30 miles, but man it's a blast. It's a little scary though. I was doing around 90 or 100mph (my best calculation...stupid metric speedometers) and more than once a Porsche flew by us like we were in reverse. Oh...and forget about pothole or tar-plugged creases...that thing's all flat. Even though the U.S. highway system is based on the autobahn, it's pathetically inadequate.

I thought the US highway system strived for staighter lines while the autobahn had lots of subtle turns that kept you focus on the road and prevented road hypnosis, unlike teh american highways heh.

construction methods are different in america and european countries in general... ALL of their roads are better than ours...
They use like 3-8 layers of different materials under the road to prevent heave and cracking...
We usually just lay down a heavy concrete slab and lay ashvalt over that... it makes for easy re-surfacing of the highways but less longevity...
Of course our surfaces are stickier and less fatique causing... WHEN they're not cracked and potholed all over..

never been to germany though... I've driven like I was on the autobahn a couple times...
Oh and in some states there are no speedlimits on the highways after a certain time... montana I BELIEVE is one of them.

True but look at the law.. it says a safe speed or something of the sort.. if you are driving 50mph in the rain at night in montana, some cop could technically say that was not a safe speed and give you a ticket.

Yeah...I was in in high school for 3 years, then I graduated.

Yeah...the base of the autobahn is something like 48 inches where the U.S. Highway system is somewhere in the teens I think. Someone told me once you could literally land an airplane on the autobahn without any worries at all.

Roaming around the country with my brother. When my father got out of the seminary (yes, he was a priest at one point), he spent a whole summer driving around Germany with some of his friends so he thought it would be good for us to do the same sort of thing. We weren't there for quite that long and we mostly stayed in Rothenburg, Munich, Frankfurt, and the black forest. Oh...and a day in Switzerland. Good times...good times.
