Does anyone know how to actually become Shriner? No, I'm not kidding and I don't want to do it because you get a wicked cool fez (although that does sweeten the deal). When I was a kid I went twice a week to do physical therapy at the Shriner's hospital in Houston and had surgery done at the hospital in St. Louis when I was 13...all free of charge. After all of that I feel obliged to give something back to them...even if it means being one of those guys who stands by a pot while people walk by you not making eye contact or ocassionally giving you money.

Well no...but dropping money in a bucket just doesn't seem to cut it for me. Besides, a lot of the kids they treat are just like me and I turned out ok (albeit slightly insane and sort of alcoholic). It'd be a helluva lot easier for a kid to identify with me than...well...I call you people "normies".

The Shriners (http://www.shrinershq.org/) are probably one of the largest philanthropic groups in the world. They have hospitals all over the country (and probably abroad), they have parades and circuses that come to vitrually every large town in the country, and around christmas one can be found collecting money in front of virtually every grocery store, shopping mall, Best Buy, etc. right next to those salvation army shmoes...althougn most people ignore them or pretend they don't exist.

I've heard of the organization, but I don't ever recall seeing any of their volunteers standing next to the salvation army schomes (as you so lovingly called them;) )......and I definitely think it's awesome that you're willing to "repay" them for the help that they gave you. And I agree that the kids they help now would definitely relate more to someone that has gone through what they're going through than say someone like me.

They're easy to pick out due to their wicked badass red fez hats.

I didn't know who they were either... I've heard of shriner's hospitals before but I never realized they were some group...

I did know of the group with the fez hats but I never knew their name or what they were about.
