Why the hell has it become so popular over the last few years? Don't get me wrong, not all of it is bad, but for the most part it's soooooo fucking annoying. All the stuff they show on Adult Swim after the good cartoons is just terrible. Inuyasha, FLCL, Lupin III, Big O, etc. Back in the day everyone and their mother told me to watch Akira. Long story short...I own the movie, have seen it 5 or 6 times and still couldn't tell you what it's about. Now a lot of movies coming out of China/Japan/Hong Kong (yeah...HK is in China but it's got it's own little film industry going) are absolutely genius. I could give you about half a dozen asian live action films that will stomp the living fuck out of American movies (for a list longer than that, check out my homepage...tons of asian movie reviews. Some better than others). They just can't seem to muster the same quality for their animation (in my opinion). If I've missed something, please advise me as much of this is mostly just my opinion and I know I haven't seen every piece of anime under the sun...but what I have seen annoys the fuck outta me.

I'm a huge fan of SOME anime, I agreee with you on the whole adult swim bs they broadcast but if you want to see some truly good shit check "spirited away" that movie is amazing, my ex loved it and now owns it but she hates anime. other than that I'm a fan of Rurouni Kenshin but not so much as the movies that precede the series and follow it. Rurouni Kenshin OAV 1 and 2, better known in america as Samurai X, full of blood gore and ass kicking samurai style. Also the storyline is just awesome.
you like samurai shit i'd suggest finding and watching Samurai X find it at your local stores like BestBuy or CircuitCity whicheve ryou have around you
also another one is Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust

I've seen Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke (sp?) and both were good...but they were presented in a more epic full-length form. I'm talking about the 1/2 hour - hour shitfests on TV.

well Rurouni Kenshin OAV(Samurai X) was made as a special in japan so it is set in 4 episodes half hour each.. not sure how the second one was set it's been some time since I've seen em. I completely forgot about Princess Mononoke, that was an amazing movie

I usually like what adult swim puts out. Some....eh.
The problem w/ anime is that you cant just jump right into the thing w/o having seen the first episode...because most, if not all, are like one giant story (because most are made directly from a manga storyline).
Inuyasha is ok most of the time...then you get some really crappy episodes.
FLCL is just plain crazy. Ive watched the series 3 times and I still dont get it...but thats kinda supposed to happen I think......
Wolf's Rain...I dont get it
YuYu Hakusho I like
Cowboy Bepop is very easy to understand and is something that you don't really need to see from the begining to think its alright (which is why adult swim has run it since it started showing anime...)
Trigun...I hate
Oh, if you liked Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke, Nauicaa - Valley of the Wind is coming out soon. Its ok...not as good as Princess Mononoke...but it at least makes sense, unlike Spirited Away.

See...DBZ is one of the worst, IMO. I dunno...I just can't stand it. Give me Takashi Miike or Kinji Fukasaku anyday.

I hate Anime. Period.
Well, ok...so Akira was ok until he started tripping and seeing huge teddy bears roaming the room and eating things. That was pretty gay.

Dragon ball and dragon ball Z are two of the greatest anime of all time GT was created buy some other guy who f**ked up the whole damn thing and actually both dragon ball and z were created for adults in Japan that’s why most episodes have been censored for America... Gundam Wing is pretty good 2 but I never really got into it or anything else...

gundam wing is by far one the greatest animes ever created. ever episode and movie. all series made by different people and yet it still kicks ass.

anime...is something that you either love or hate. There are so many different varieties of it that most anybody can find a series that they'd like. However, there's plenty of titles out there that either suck in general, or it's just really hard to get into(ALA weird ones like FLCL and Serial Experiments Lain...talk about a head trip!)
Another thing that's hard to get used to with anime is the vast cultural difference between japan and america. Things such as the sweat drops, random changes from normal to midget-sized(SD or super deformed in the anime world) for a comedic scene, and other things such as historic and pop culture references are incredibly difficult to catch on to and tolerate in most cases. It all just takes some getting used to.
I've always liked anime, hell, I wathced Robotech(Macross) when I was 5 and I still love it to this day. The robots kick ass, the story is increibly well written for how old it is, and there was actual CHARACTER DEVLOPMENT. something you never heard about back in those days.(epsecially when pretty much the only thing we had was either looney toons or transformers)
If you're seriously wanting to get into anime, I'd reccomend any of Hayao Miyazaki's films(Princess Mononoke being probably the best one to watch first, since it's got a fairly easy to follow story)
Evangelion is good too. It's got crazy mecha battles(although the designs might be unappealing to some), TONS of character development and drama(i.e., the commander of the base is the main characters dad and they hate each other, stuff like that)
about the only thing I wouldn't reccomend EVA for is it's weirdness in the end. believe me, the last 2 episodes i was like...WTF!?
one last one that is excellent to start out with that is non Adult-Swim material is GTO(Great Teacher Onizuka) not so much the anime cause I find the Manga(comics) WAY funnier. What's funnier than a biker punk gone teacher to reform a class of delinquents(sp?) ?...NOTHING that;s what.
Anyways, I think I've rambled on enough about this. I hope I was of some help to you guys ^_^
