Hey i was just wondering if there was anybody who has disconnected their power steering. I was wondering how it affected the handling of your vehicle, how hard it was, and if you like it.

Why would you do this?? lol

And PLEASE don't say more power.

i read in a magazine, it increases the road feel and is good for 4 peak horsepower, i looked at a dyno chart and through the torque curve the gains aren't bad for taking off a belt. I figured out how to do it and it does seem a little peppier at certain spots in the powerband. Still experimenting with the driving part though. I figure if it starts to suck, then i'll just throw the belt back on. And besides, when you have a car as slow as mine, every pony counts! lol

yes!!! i have no power steering and i love it! I can handle corners at awesome speeds. The only time it really sucks is when youre in a parking lot but believe me its got me muscles which im not complaining about......

 The Fcuk did he just say?

yeah parking lots sucks, but hey i need some muscles, high speed corners are fun and i figure i'll probably but the belt back on, and when i go to import wars, (or an organized street race) i'll take it off again. I just didn't notice the tensioner before but now i know what i'm doin.

I had no p/s on my last car... it was AWESOME... I loved the feel compared to the p/s on my civic..

However... i wouldn't just yank the belt...

It'll work but it'll be much stiffer then it should be if it were no p/s to start with... however non-ps rack generally have CRAPPY ratio's... IE it takes more turns of the wheel to accomplish the same amount of wheel turn...

The 96 ITR had an option for no p/s... and has a good ratio but finding that rack would probobly cost an arm and a leg...

You "can" just pull your belt but it's pretty silly imo... at least get rid of the extra pump weight to.. then you'll drop like .00001 sec. of your quarter... instead of .00000001 with just the belt.

Long story short... unless it's part of an overall trend of removing weight and accessories you're going to see little to no gain...

The stock p/s system free-wheels most of the time anyway... it's not putting much drag on the crank.

yea, but taking out the whole system would be a royal pain in the ass i assume no? Also how much does it change the feel when you take it all out versus just disconnecting the belt?

You have to modify the p/s rack to work properly w/o pressure...

Some say it's awesome... some had their racks go bad weeks after doing it..

I'd check out h-t and do some research on it before you make any decision...

If you want to do it just for sh!ts and giggles then just pulling the belt is the best way...

That way you can just re-connect it... but the system DOES get jerky w/o the pump running... My pump disconnected itself at one point and the car would RANDOMLY pull to one side or the other... and was VERY hard to turn RANDOMLY... which is CERTAINLY not an increase in steering performance IMO.

Frankly I wouldn't delete p/s w/o removing the entire system and replacing the p/s rack with a non-p/s rack with decent gearing...

But again... this isn't a power mod on it's own... it needs to be part of a general trend of deleting accessories and weight in order for it to be ANY kind of performance mod... and even then it would be pointless unless you run in a class the prohibits modifiing for power in other ways...

I'd rather turbo my car or whatever and keep p/s and a/c then to pull them both NA and have less power.

oh fuk that! My Teg didnt have p/s when I first got it. That shit blows! Driving is no problem, but getting out of my tiny ass garage and parking sux. I always had to park where nobody does just so I can get the car lined up straight. Luckily, my hydraulic p/s ram didnt get f'd up since the previous owner had it off for over a year. I was also able to get everything I needed to restore my p/s from an 01 ITR...... I will never take mine off. 4-5 HP is not worth it to me.... .....lol
