View Full Version : turboD16, gets too hot for interstate driving?

I finally got the chance to take my turboD to the track yesterday, 5/19/04 and so i go on I-94 for about 45 minutes; i accidentally missed the exit because my buddy and I saw a nice RX-8, otherwise we would have been on the highway for only 30 minutes. On the highway the car was cruisin' at about 75 mph @ 3400 RPM, the car may be under boost this whole time but i don't know since i don't have a boost gauge.

So we get to the tracks and i notice the car wasn't running smooth, it felt sluggish and like it was kinda boggin'. The temperature gauge shows that its not overheating but the car felt like it was acting up so i let it sit for 10 minutes before i lined up. Also, i looked at the cat-converter and steam was coming off of it, and since the 75 mph winds weren't hitting it that it got too hot? It went away shortly after.

Finally i get up to race, and in first gear everything went fine, then i shifted into second gear, about 2-3 seconds after i shifted, i felt the cars power drop and the CEL went off so i coasted the rest of the way...my only run that night was 24 seconds at 36 mph...

After that, I let the car sit for about 45 minutes hoping the light would go away. I started her up after letting her cool off, code went away, and drove it around the pit area and after about 2 minutes the code popped on again... so I parked the car for about a hour. Came back, disconnected/connected the battery (removed the CEL) and we drove home. On the way home i cruised at 65 on the interstate and everything seemed fine, the code didn't come on again. I drove it again today (5/20) and let her rev up to about 5000 RPM and she runs nice and smooth as if nothing happened.

So my question is, is it possible for the car to throw a code because the car was too hot despite the fact that the temperature gauge shows the car wasn't overheating?

put a jumper on the harness byt the ECU and turn your key to 'accessories/on' but dont start it and it will blink in sequence. long flashes first, then short flashes. as in: long long short short short would be 23, per se'

hmm why did u reset the ecu before pulling the code ? i am sure that will be a repeat code anyway

ACtually to get it to flash code, turn the key on to Aux and off three times, it will then flash the codes. Thats a lot easier then a jumper trick, trust me.

As far as the car is concerned have you put it on the dyno and tuned it yet? You may want to do that soon just to ensure that your A/F mixture is correct.

i don't know what code it was throwing, cuz i decided to reset the ecu by taking the negative terminal of the battery out. The car ran like sh*t with the code, probably in limp mode and when i removed it, the car drove home fine.

I don't think there would be a problem with my A/F ratio, because its running of the pre-set e-manage settings at stock boost level

honestly, that wasnt smart to clear it w/o checking to see what it was.
hopefully its still in memory and you can pull it from the diagnostic port under the dash...head on over to autoshits or pepboys for a free scan.
Once you know what it is you can go about fixing it.
