Bent a rod, whats next?

I think I bent a rod. What am I gonna do?

well, since youre asking, take it to a shop to have someone look and find out.
Do you have a knocking sound?
I have heard of people removing the plugs and inserting a long screwdriver into the hole and manually cranking the motor and watching how far the screwdriver travels. If it is shorter distance in 1 cyl. your rod is bent....theoretically...

Or you can just pull the head and remove them from the top to look

I'll ask the questions here, how hard is it to replace?? can you do it with the engine still in the car??

It's not "easy" but if you know what you're doing it's a LOT easier than tons of other less intimidating jobs....

It depends if you can get the piston low enough to disconnect the rod w/o removing it all the way... if you pull the piston out past the rings then you'll have to re-install the piston from the top... which means removing the head... which means you might as well do...

Timing belt/water pump/tensioner
Headgasket
And any seals that would be a bitch to get to later... depending on the milage of your car now... if it's low (under 100k mi.) I wouldn't bother doing the seals...

Oh and if it's stick you may want to consider doing the clutch depending on how long it's been in there...

Basically a bent rod can turn you car into a money pit. or it can go in for the cost of the rod and bearing...

Oh and I'd do ALL the rod bearings while I was under there... unfortunately I believe you'll have to wait till you drop the oil pan to see WHICH bearings you need for which cylinders... they are color coded by size.

If you want to replace all the rods with lets say eagle H beams you take off the head, take off the oil pan and thats really just about it right, cuz my car has like 36,000 miles and it does not need a new water pump, timing belt or anything. BTW I did not bend a rod I'm just wondering what kind of a job this is.

yeah. take off the head, take off the oil pan, and you can turn the crank with a 19mm to get the rod caps off. Just dont scratch or ding anything and keep everything where it will go back EXACTLY like it was.

NO...

I would NEVER consider upgrading rods with the engine in the car...

It's utterly pointless and would make MORE work of it then if you just pulled the motor...

You understand that to pull the head you NEED to pull EVERYTHING that you would to do a timing belt...

PLUS... intake AND exhaust manifolds (that means new gaskets) which means you basically disconect the engine anyway... the only thing really leaving it connected would be the mounts...

The reason I say it'd be easier out is... you have to notch the block to use Aftermarket rods... and you would DEFINATELY need to re-hone the cyl. walls and frankly it would be silly to not do pistons and rings at the same time...

Rods aren't something I'd add into an otherwise stock engine... and even if I did I wouldn't do it with the engine still in the car.

Just my opinion though.

115 in 4th. Thats how I did it. Maybe I should have changed the oil first huh?

Yes theses are very loun enginge knock that gets louder every second . Virtually no power and I think the car stop turning over. But the engines out now and were gonna tear it down later on so we'll find out.

Well if you bend 1 rod how much would 1 stock replacement cost new, when you can get 4 brand new ones for $300 that are 100 times stronger.

115 in fourth.. hmm.. doesnt seem like that should have bent it. But meh.. I would replace all four of them for sure. Aftermarket rods are a great way to begin building up the lower block.

Just wondering.. what speeds do you normally hit when you are hammering it?

yeah, i dont see why taking 4th to redline would end up bending a rod. maybe you were low on oil and spun a bearing?

Possibly. I did throw the rod. Its a rap not gonna fix it. Any body got a b16a2 for sale? CHEAP. In the New York or PA area. Just the motor nothing else and I mean Cheap.
