Short Throw Shifters

OK i definatley need a STS, the stock throw is killing me, so i could use some suggestions. There's just too many to choose from. I was wondering the differences between single/double bend, and some that are adjustable etc.

Thermal, i noticed on your civic, the shifter like curls up, i'm assuming it's so you don't have to reach your arm into the dashboard to shift. How do you like it and where did you get it?

I love my skunk2 dual bend...I used to have a B&M that rattled w/o rubber washers and was waaaay too far away for me to enjoy. I dont think I could comforably go back to a stock civic shifter.

The difference of the bends is how close the knob will be to you and the angle of it.
The dual bends tend to be closer

Just remember...shifting faster wears synchros quicker. DO NOT "race/quick shift" all the damn time. Shift slowly...like grandma does.
Cheaper shifters are known to break, literally in 1/2, when it comes time to race (legally!).

On a side note, a lot of people just change to a stock integra or sometimes del sol shifter. Both are "shorter" than civics and you retain stock quality. Neither of them are as short as aftermarket...which may be good if you think youre going to be slammin gears all the time....................no self-restraint

Mine is a dual-bend focuz short throw for a Teg... not a civic. I like it but.... here's a little secret..... get a stock del sol shifter. Those are awesome since it is pointed towards the driver and still shorter than stock. I will trade the short throw from my Teg to a stock del sol shifter sometime next week.

he means the polyurethane bushings, the stock piece comes with rubber bushings; over time, the rubber pieces get soft and doesn't offer the firmness of the polyurethane pieces

ah ha, thanks for clearing that up, where could i find some poly bushings? i could always install them later i suppose right?

you can install them later if you wish, but my question is WHY? you'll have to remove the shifter linkage which holds the bushing, since its out of might as well replace it right there and then. unless you like to waste your time...:yes:

i had polys on my shifting linkages on my Z6 hatch. I hate polys on upper and lower control arms on a suspension, but on anti-sway bars, and shifting linkages they are worth their weight in gold! Mine were from energy suspension. Good luck.

Well i got it installed. Wasn't too bad but had to figure some things out since it didn't come with instructions but i must say i love it. Takes away a lot of fatigue around the city and is much faster for my 0-60 runs.

How long does it usually take to install an STS kit?

well if i had instructions it probably would have been about 10-15 minutes shorter, but basically you jack up the car, take off your shift knob and undo the screws that hold in the center console. Then you go under the car, undo the bolt that holds the shifter linkage to the STS itself, then there's two bolts that hold a cuppy thing that holds the STS into the car. then just reverse the process. I figure anybody who can jack up a car, and turn a couple of wrenches can do it.

once you get another $20 you should invest in the bushings...its like "brand new"...not just "new" feeling

ok...I was gonna try to do it...but after I leave this wretched place...I'll have a whole month off so I'll have time to fix it if I screw up... ;)
Nobody ever said anythign about B&M...was that a good brand to get because that was what I had got...

The best short shifter I have found is to take the stock shifter cut it fairly high above the "ball" and cut again at bushings/shiftlinage hooks now flip the piece so that the longer part is on bottom instead of top reweld the linkage to the now longer end (make sure you have removed the bushings before welding and reinsert after it has cooled). if you want it extremely short you can cut more off the top part to make the top shorter, re weld and install... it's cheap, custom, and is the best functioning.

Got measurements? Not bad but if you could do a how to in the step by step section since that would be helpful, a friend of mine was considering doing that but he didn't want to mess it up.

Its almost impossible to screw up.

First undo the knob from inside and remove the center console.
Then just remove the middle exhasut hanger so you can push it to the side (or you can take the whole thing down).
Then just unbolt the old shifter and pull it down.
Put in the new one (this is the only part that is even possible to screw up.......you could put it in backwards...)
Put your stuff back and call it a day.

Some shifters require you to reuse the stock shifter wieght/ball's bushing...some dont. That'd be easy to figure out by just comparing the two.

An important note: Do not make the shifter bolt too tight or else you will not be able to shift since the forks will be squeezing the end too tightly.

haha i know how to install it pdiggs i did my skunk 2 myself! lol i was wondering how to cut the stock shifter down and flip it around like he was talking about because i always thought shifters were weighted or something and that modifying it like that would mess it up.

yeah i think my friend ordered a pacesetter shifter for his car, although i'm not sure about their products, they sound a little sketchy to me. It's supposed to reduce throw by something like 80% ?!?!
