you would have to get a new wiring harness, that is capable of vtec, other people will help you on this question since i have no idea where to start

in order to convert your non vtec motor to a vtec, your gonna need a few things.
1) complete vtec head that matches your block (in your case it would be a d16 vtec head, d16z6 or d16y8)
2) if the head doesn't come with it, vtec activation unit
3) oil lines to supply vtec mechanism
4) chipped or new ecu with vtec
It might sound hard but its really not, and if you wanna keep the d16 motor the d16 heads are real cheap.

oops didn't read your post too carefully the first time... if you want a motor swap that gets more complicated. you can use your original harness, you just need to modify it with extra wires and whatnot. the vtec would be wired into your harness to plug into the ecu and wired to the vtec soleniod.
on a scale of one to ten, 1 being piss easy, 10 being like torture, how easy will it be ?? dropping a b16a2 or 3 into ma civic 95 coupe ? it origerally it had a 1.5 16 valver non vtec

no mechanical experience... 15
some mechanical experience... 8
swapped a motor before... 3
you would also have to do some wiring. theres tons of sites that can give you info on how to do the swap. just do some searching.
nice one mate thanx:thumbsup:

my friend has a 98 civic LX and he's thinking about doing the vtec upgrade... would it be cheaper/easier to upgrade the head and convert to vtec, or to put a complete EX motor in?

in the long run: full swap, less hassle.....

why would u want to put an EX motor into an LX?? that's not even worth the trouble of the gain. it's barely a gain. If you want a better motor get one from an integra (b18b or b18c) or a civic si motor. or one of them thar fancy type R motors.

b16a2 into a 95 civic is a breeze, not a whole lot of wiring to be done, i think there is about 4 wires for vtec, just need to run them through the fire wall and put them where they go, now where it gets complicated in terms of wiring is when you only have 2 injectors in your car(dual point) and your wiring for port injection, been there, done that, it sucked!!!!!!!!!! being a 95, it should already have port injection, so all you have to worry about is the 4 vtec wires

do a b18c swap... b16 isn't so great. Has an almost perfect r/s ratio but still doesn't compare to the capability of a gsr etc... b16 would be more expensive in the long run
