Well, I thought LS was the non-VTEC version of the B18...buuut...can anyone explain the big deal to me?

basically putting a vtec head on a nonvtec block LS/vtec a.k.a. Frankenstein

I think it's gay in my opinion. I dont see what some people are vtec crazy. i personally think boost is 10x better than "VTEC"

Yes and they can screw up very easily. But its a nice setup i know some people who are running it..

yeah, i have to agree boost is better than vtec obviously, but combine the 2 and should be a nice combination. I stand behind my vtec, in a turn in 2nd it can break the tires loose ( on kuhmo's with lsd) and basically fly off the road , feels and sounds like the car was sleeping, and you just gave it a shot of caffiene (sp?) and still manage 31+mpg.... i kinda like it...

Ya know...of all the things said, no one's explained it really.:o

Ok, basically, its an ls integra (b18b) block, which was nonvtec and mount either a gsr (b18c) head or b16 head on top.
Then make the needed taps for oil.
Since most people doing it tend to know about engines, they do a little build w/ some rods, pistons, sleeving, better valves, etc etc.
Now, it does make for a lot of torque and generally, they have high compression (because of the building of it w/ new, different parts), and it makes for a good race motor (drag).
Since the ls block was never designed for vtec, thats its downfall. It cannot survive long under the conditions that it is being put toward...especially under daily driving...........and it dies.
There is also crvtec, which is a b20z/b block w/ a vtec head. Essentially, it is exactly the same because a b20 block is the exact same thing as an ls block, just bored out a little bigger for 2.0L displacement. (it doesnt work either)

Or what you could have done, is a search because there is an amazing write up.

i'm anti vtec =\ id go LS, bore it, then boost the hell out of it... vtec sucks for boost cause it doesnt get as good compression... shrug... speaking of which, anybody have a turbo manifold for ls motor for sale? =x

disagreed, you're taking a freaking suv block that can handle not only boost, but probably a few shots of nitrous, a buddy did this in his del sol jackson blower with 150shot nitrous, its been running good for over ayear, races it every weekend.... if i would do anything crazy that would be it

Nope, I know exactly what Im talking about
b20 block is just a bored ls to 2.0L...its exactly the same otherwise.
The sleeves are really weak and thin because of it, and unless its resleeved it will crack @/around 6psi
that motor is either built or he's bs-ing everyone because stock it could NOT handle that even at all
and 150shot? I really really really really doubt it

i really really see it, ever saturday =x yellow del sol jackson blower and a 150 in the trunk, he's running acutally 6psi right now i believe, the top end was totally built i believe the block has some work, not sure, i dont know his car very well, but i do know... but ive driven the car and seen the motor bay, he comes to the meets every saturday handling isnt very well cause the weight ratio is totally off, but thats the only real flaw to the car

how is the weight ratio off?
Is it a b20a?

Hmmm....why in the devil would you put a VTEC head on an LS, when you can just get a GSR swap? This guy at a shop around here is offering a JDM brand new (30k miles) B18 GSR swap, with warranty and installed in the car for $3,700. He also has a good rep. I was going to buy it (actually set up the install appointment) but I realized that school was more important.

I'm with you P
I've heard way to much bad shit, and read to much to trust the B20.

I dont know about that..... VTEC and boost is not that bad. My car fucking screams like crazy when VTEC and boost starts going..... I will state my opinion on VTEC/boost, but too many people have their own views on this.......

VTEC has NO effect on boost other than benificial ones...

It opens the valves higher... that lets more air in... whether it's by vacum or forced in...

The problem with vtec engines and boost is their stock cam timing... lots of them have over lap... a point where the exhaust valve is still open a little as the intake valve is opening... this in an NA block helps suck air into the cyl... in a boosted car it allows power to escape... All you really need to do to boost vtec efficiently is to either get a cam (in the case of a SOHC) made for boost or time the DOHC's properly...

Other than that variable valve lift is the most ideal scenario for boost... it allows the engine to make power before boost by not opening the valves too much... and to let the power in once you're in the upper rpms making boost...

Also depending on where the turbo spools you may want to change the normal vtec event... if it spools high you may leave it the same or raise it a touch... if it spools fast then you may want it to engage early to take advantage of the extra air available.

ON TOPIC...

I know a kid who's built SEVERAL VERY succesful ls/vtec engines... he's also built turbo ls's... He thinks that they both have their up and down sides.. but says there is NOTHING inherently wrong with doing an ls/vtec... it's just a matter of execution... if you build it properly it will last just as long as any other motor... they're problem proned becuase they're generally done by in-experienced dudes trying something out.
