fuel filter

i hadve a question about checking the fuel filter. im doing my routine maintnace. and in the haynes manaul it says to depress the gas, and bunch of other stuff. do i really have to do all this or can i just unbolt the cover and replace it? i have a 99 civic ex. i have som other small question but i will wait till this one is answered. :)

do you mean relieve the fuel pressure? if so then yeah you should do it, easiest way is to turn the car on and then pull the fuel pump fuse. when the car dies then you know the pressure is gone and then just replace the filter.

I thought you could just open the gas cap

i pretty sure that doesnt do anything, since by removing the gas cap the only pressure you could relieve would be air press in the gas tank.

there usually is not enough fuel to worry about doing that. Good tip though AZCivic

Ive never changed my filter...guess I could do it this spring though...

when I did mine I did just that, pulled the fuse tried to start the car (it didn't of course) then changed the filter. No problems, No worries.

sounds like someone needs to do some preventative maintenance.

I do all of the other things...
But now that I think about it, Im sure it was done by the owner before I bought the car slightly over 2yrs ago...he said all major issues were taken care of and maint. just done @ honda.
Either way, i guess it wouldnt hurt to spend the money and change it.......learning experience

ok, thanks guys. i know what to do know. for my next question. i have to replace my spark plugs and i am going to replace the plug wires aswell. what plugs and plug wires do you suggest. if possible i wanted the wires in red. thanx for the quick responses.

yeah dont get any wierd wires. Unless you want spoon ones with the sexy grounds. I have bsch platinum plugs and i like them.

Ive always been a fan of NGK.. for both plugs & wires.. I guess it because I used to race motocross. I do run these on my civic.

Or just slowly unscrew the banjo fitting on top of the filter. Make sure the car turned off and put a rag over the fitting....

I saw a dyno test a while ago testing aftermarket wires versus stock ones. Most all aftermarket wires made less power than stock! Even he Nology hotwires! Granted we are talking about 1 or 2 horsepower but It shocked me also. The only wires that made more power than stock were 8.5MM magnecore wires. To be honest I think they only made like .8 (something like that, anyways. Not enough to worry about) WHP over stock! BTW this car was a normal B16, i/h/e. Nothing really special. So it really doesnt make a difference on N/A applications. Definately for the price go with factory honda wires.

As far as spark plugs goes I have tried all different kinds. From autolites, Bosch, NGK, Splitfires, AC Delco Rapid Fires, ect. As far as plugs goes in my experience the Splitfires, and Autolites are junk. The Bosch's, and AC delco's are ok. I like the NGK's. They are my favorite, and they seem to last the longest and the least amount of wear and tear than any other.

I agree witht the NGK plugs, I've heard that honda's realy don't benefit much from other plugs. Besides there OEM and as you can see most honda guys prefer them.

Fuk nology. I spent too much money on that crap back in my newbie days. It will not do shit...nothing recognizable anyway. That was my first $130 down the drain.......:no:
