Ok...here's a stupid question, but since I'm new to the whole Honda tuner scene (it's my first Honda):
I know VTec is great. High school kiddies lust after it. Muscle car fanatics ridicule it. Honda doesn't put it in enough cars. But...um...when does it kick in? 3,500 RPM? 4,000 RPM? I've had my Del Sol (on the highway) up to 4,500 in fifth gear, and I didn't feel any sudden "boost". Don't flame me - I'm just wondering:
When does the VTec system kick in? Why can't I feel any noticable difference?

yours kicks in around 4800 (d16z6 w/ a p28)
different engines have vtec engagement @ different points

and vtec is not ever gonna get you a sudden boost in power unless you have some radical cam setup.

mines a pretty noticable power increase

my old and new one did too.
Now, as you know not every honda has VTEC. If you have a del sol type s i dont even think u have it.
Unless u got the sol Si i dont think u will feel a dramatic inscrease

unless you have a dohc engine with some mods you wont really feel a noticable power increase, mine didnt feel like anything untill i/e/h and cam gears, and a bit of vafc tuning. you'll hear it on sohc, but from my experience, the power just isnt as noticable on sohc vtecs

I'm sure I have a VTec....because when I open the hood it says "Honda VTec".
The engine is a SOHC, as you guys pointed out. So you're saying I won't feel any noticable power boost unless I have new cam gears? Thats where you get into an area I don't know anything about. Advice? please? :)

its an sohc so youre probably never going to really feel it kick on like you would with a dohc...its more of a noise thing
oh, and just because it says vtec doesnt really mean anything. my valvecover doesnt say vtec but i still know it has it (look for the solenoids off to the left instead)

yeah vtec isnt the end all problem in honda engines... its just a feature to let you have a more aggressive lift/durration on your valuves at high rmps, while keeping low gas milage and easier city driving in low rmps

Really? Didn't know that...thanks. How much do DOHC 1.6 V's run? Although I'll probably stick with the stock engine.

are you asking how much do they cost?
B16's can run anywhere from $1k-4k (im including a1's and ctr in that)
the d16z6 is a fine engine...

When my friend (sohc_vtec 2NR) had his exhaust intalled, you could here the difference in the noise of the exhaust once you hit vtec. Also if I remember correctly, you could hear the car change sound even when it just had intake installed on it.

Mine's SOHC VTEC and when I stuck on my intake, I could hear the difference, but I don't think there's much (any) power increase when it switches.

well... the ideal way for vtec to work, is right when your lower cam grind and upper cam grind torque curves meet, because then you have the best power possible at any given time for that particular cam. if you went aftermarket, and got a performance stick in there instead of the stock one, you could really fine tune your engine(on stock internals) with a set of cam gears
