need some 1992 nissan sentra help

got lots of cash together, don't feel like modding the Z, so I came across a 1992 Nissan Sentra SE-R for $500. Has running engine but the manual tranny is shot. I was thinking, what type(s) of swaps could I throw at this car? I'm not looking for huge power immediately, as I don't have that much to spend, but I do want power potential and reliability. Can spend abt 1k on the motor/trans and can install myself... Thanks.

I used to have a 93 sentra e.... OMG... the ser rocks...

That engine is like 5-10 things away from being a sr20det... the JDM silvia...

Those motors are SICK SICK SICK... with not too much money that thing could be a 300hp fwd MONSTER...

Oh and the STOCK tranny has LSD...

Although the tranny is the limitation of the engine in that car...

There was an artical in "Turbo Magazine" on a not-so-street tranny upgrade for that motor in that chassis... they said it was the most streetable race tranny they've ever driven... and I know people who drive similar trannies on the street...

as you can see internally its quite different...almost b18b and b18c if you wanna say it in honda terms

boost that sucker as soon as the tranny prob is fixed and it will kick major ass...you might even get rid of the 350 because of it ;)

The DET has oil squirter piston coolers
The DET has a bigger oil pump.
The DET has a different front pulley.
The DET has lower compression pistons (8.3:1 vs 9.5:1).
The DET has bigger injectors.
The DET has direct ignition.
The DET has a variable intake cam, runs retarded at idle, advanced mid range and retarded top end.
The DET has mechanical shim in bucket type lifters with a slightly bigger in duration exhaust cam.

That sounds like a headswap and some pistons...

Not too big a deal at all...

Not to mention PLENTY of people have had more than enough luck boosting the snot out of the de block without any mods...

the tranny isn't even an issue I believe till you try to go over 300 hp or so. I could be wrong but I'm damn sure that they can take 250 whp no problem without any mods.

Cross that... according to turbo magazine the STOCK block can take about 20psi with NO problems...

This block is SOOOO far superior to ANYTHING honda makes it's rediculous...

The crank/rods are FORGED, it's closed deck, it's a 2.0.

They have gobs and gobs of advantage over a honda... not a mitsu 2.0t awd though.
But imo it's a better all around car...

I LOVED my sentra.

anyways...yeah as far as boost goes, honda motors are about the weakest out there (that I know of) on stock internals...but in reality they never were meant to see it

I know dsm blocks can handle similar amounts w/o probs

I just can't believe (and haven't been able to since I first found out) that nissan didn't pay for the tooling to put cheaper non-forged rods/crank in the de's instead of the forged det components... It COULDN'T have been a cost effective decision.

well they sure as hell do now, check out the problems with the qr25de, i'm already on my third motor.

as for the ser, check with forced induction racing about a bolt on turbo kit for it, the owner has a 2001 SE sentra with a sr20de in it putting down around 400whp. so same motor but you'll have the better tranny. or yeah go for the gti-r swap, the clip will run around $2500-$3000 last time i checked on it(a little over a year ago). many tuners of the sr20 feel that the de version is better than the det btw for high hp turbo apps, has to do with the oil squirters and something else that likes to take a dump sometimes. feel free to check into that.

stillen makes a lot of parts but they're majorly overpriced. jim wolf has cams and valvetrain components. the car will be a monster if you want it to be.

oh, az the gti-r det is basically a redtop except its fwd. there is one difference that seems to want to be mentioned by me but i can't remember it for some reason right now.
