View Full Version : Why do people insist on mispelling common words?

Here's some examples of words that piss me off:

favourite
shoppe
colour
cheques

What the hell is wrong with these people? We don't live in England and that's not the way we spell things. but I know people who consistantly spell words like this. WTF?

I don't have anything to add about the misspelling of words, but I do have this to add....there are too many people I talk to that use the word "yous" and I just want to beat them over the head! Examples would be "Yous guys should see this" or "Are yous two going out tonight". Geez, who taught them that? It just really annoys me! Sorry, had to get it out.

I'm actually looking at my Vtech phone as I type this. And just to piss people off I refer to vtec as "variable timing electronically controlled". If it's Canidiots spelling this way...it's just one more reason I'm not a fan of Canada. Nothing against any Canadians here...but I can't stand the way you guys spell shit or talk.

I went to PA on business...that yous crap is a PA thing as far as I can tell, and was it ever annoying. Glad to see that not everyone from PA thinks that's normal.

Wrong... any carbonated beverage WILL be referred to as "coke"... ask for a "coke" at a restaraunt in the south and they will ask you what kind... then tell them your preference.

I say pop. A lot of the northern states say pop. Here's my theory on why us northern folk say pop: If you look at the northern accent, we tend to hold onto our long vowels longer. If we were to say soda we would sound pretty ridiculous since other people would be saying "soda" and people like me would be saying "soooda". So to me its a dignity thing. We don't want to sound dumb so we just adopted another word for those delicious carbonated beverages.;)

Actually, that's a huge thing with all the f@ckin Ginos in New Jersey and NY. But those damn PA folks do it too for some reason.

As for pop vs. soda...that was a thread a while back, no? For all of you people who say "pop" you're sorely incorrect. "Pop" is a word that describes a sound (an onimotopia...sp?). Soda is a drink. Get it f@ckin right.

Edit: Highlander...please don't EVER base anything, especially grammar, on anything they do in the south (this becomes even more important the deeper into the south you get). There are some lovely people and places in the south but as a general rule I want little or nothing to do with it...and I spent 7 years living in TX. *shudder*

So what's wrong with Canadians spelling words the same way the English spell them? Afterall the language is English and the spellings you refer to were only changed in America. So if anybody were to be "wrong" here it would be the Americans.

Languages evolve, every person uses a language in their own particular way (idiolect), deal with it.

What annoys me is people who constantly b*tch about language differences. It's just another form of discrimination.

There is no one, true, proper language.

About a good 99% or more of the language you use on a regular basis is only the bastardization, creolization, abbreviation, or other modification of a different or previous language. To think you're right and they're wrong makes about as much sense as Bush in a press conference.

Should I even reply to these comments:no:
Ah but wait. I will.
Yes up here in Canada we are all morons. Inbread and live in igloos, and I ride my polar bear to work (work being down at our local fishery because we don't have and clue on how your fancy technology works).
