My dad's lookin at AEM CAIs on ebay for his s2k (let's see how many more abbreviations i can use...). he found one for a really good price, but it doesn't have an air filter. so he started looking at those and found some that were stainless steel mesh. do any of you guys have any experience with these? is it really worth it?

If your dad wants a high performance intake system, he should order one from AEM or from Ingen. They make the best intakes hands down - yeah they can be pricy, but for an S2k i'd spare no expense.

Hmmmm...I just made my own. Had some mild steel tubing madrel bent, powder coated it, then got a 9" K&N conical filter for it. Cost me around $60 or so plus a case of beer for the guys at the muffler shop who bent it.

I think he should get a KN&N filter they are the best ones out there so far.

K&N or those new "super blue" ones from someone or other are supposed to actually flow MORE air than a K&N... I think they trap more particals too... same lifetime warranty too.
I have no personal experience with anything but a k&n though.

No, AEM stopped using K&N filters on their intakes and went with their own design, an AEM filter.
AEM claims it is more free-flowing than the K&N and claims it filters better as well. Whether that's true, well your guess is as good as mine.
The AEM filters are more expensive than the K&N ones IIRC. It's like a $10-15 difference between them or something.
But really, for an S2K.....what's $10-15??? Sheot.
If I had an S2K, I'd grab the small parts list from what they changed in the Spoon S2K and do that to mine. Talk about a major performer over stock for so few mods.

slow ej told me that Apex'i makes one of the best filters and that they go very well with the AEM CAI. If I ever replace my filter, I'm going to give one a shot.

I just can't justify spending that much money that (on a stock motor) will only give you 15hp max...usually more like 5-10hp.

yeah expecially on a s2k, the motor is so fine tuned... i think the complete mugen performance package yeilded about half of what a normal performance package(i/h/e) did on a civic or whatever. s2k's need internal and machine work, NAAAAWZ(its been a while... had to saw it) or forced induction of some type in order to see worth while gains.
i'd buy rims and a badass suspension for a s2k if it was me

comptech, akimoto, apexi, k&n, and cool blue are all good filters
the cool blues have plastic pieces over aluminum so it wont rust
