2000 EX question

Hi all!

I am new here and I am a current owner of a 2000 Civic EX sedan. Now, when I bought the car, the specs said that it had a V-TEC engine. The thing is, it doesn't have the V-TEC emblem on the engine cover. Do all cars with V-TEC have this emblem?
How would I check to see if this car is definitely a V-TEC??? Thanks.

Hi, welcome to HS!

It's possible to have a vtec engine without having the "vtec" valve cover.

You're best bet is to get the engine code.

D16Y8 is a 127hp vtec
D16Y7 is a 106hp non vtec


If its really an EX it should have the D16Y8.

Thanks, but where on the engine is this code written? This stuff is all new to me.

ok umm..

Go roughly 10cm to the left of your valve cover, then around 15cm towards you, go straight down maybe 40 cm..

You should see it engraved into a metal surface.

All US EX's have VTEC, they dont say it but its there. Upper Left hand corner you will see a Vtec silenoid, I think its got like a light blue cap on it.

sup man i am kinda sorta new to the honda world also.

i am in the same boat as u. i have a 2000 civic ex Manual and i am about to dump a butt load of money into engine mods. Right now just all motor. stuff like TB, CAI, Intake mani, headers, cat, custom catback, plugs, wires, ignition, coil, fuel pump, regulator, rail, fuel gauge, and injectors. later i was also looking at a cam, cam gears, and pulleys. i want to see what our D16Y8 127hp Vtec can do will out the help of forced induction or NOS. good luck with yours i start ordering the beginning to the new year. ;)

Okunfortunately my 4dr EX is a D16Y7 (non vtech)

Soo..am I screwed? I mean can I gain performance
anywhere NEAR that of a v-tec engine?

And are ALL EX's vtec? Because I have all options
(crusie control, heated mirrors etc)

Or did I get ripped off?

I should clarify my question; it sounded awkward after reading it:


I have all options that an EX has (power everything, ABS etc)
And it was sold to me from a honda dealer as an EX (and it has the emblem on it etc)

Buuut, it's non vtec.

Are there non vtec EX's in existence (sold in Canada)

We have a bunch of peeps from Canada on the board to clarify your question. There are minor differences in civic "badging" from U.S. and Canadian models:
The U.S. Civic EX is the sameas a Canadian Si (d16y8 127HP SOHC VTEC)
The U.S. Civic Si is the same as Canadian SiR (b16a 160HP DOHC VTEC)

I think that there maybe other differences on other models...

The VTEC SOHC valve cover came on the 5th gen .......

in canada, the ex is the equivalent of the US lx or dx. thus, no vtec. you'd have to get a canadian si to get an US ex.

What can I expect out of what I've got hp-wise?

Is there a way to "emulate" vtec? (like adding a third party
valve timing system etc)

Are swapping vtec heads a good idea?

What other performance mods are possible for non vtec
engines?


Aaaaand...I have an extended two year warranty still left on it. Will any of this void it? (but im starting not to care, hehe)

You can do a "mini-me" conversion but none of that is really worth it. Get a turbo if you want more power.

Dont worry about it man. A SOHC VTEC does not really give you a whiplash when it hits. Whoever says anything different is full of shiet. Love your car. That is all that matters......:cool:

That is all that matters......:cool: I agree, when i go over 4500 rpm and my VTEC kicks in, i feel a slight tug thats it. Noting great. If i were you i would looking forced induction, that will by far be your best bet.

tru..:rolleyes: vtec on a single cam is hardly noticeable, i don't really feel anythin'...the only way i can tell is the noise difference when my car hits 5500 rpm..
