Friend blew her system in a power surge and want's to upgrade, needed some thoughts.
Plan is for:
Athlon MB that supports 333mhz bus.
Athlon 2700 @ 333 FSB.
2x PC2700 DDR 256mb sticks.
Already have:
Asus G3 Ti200 Vid card
2x WD400 40 gig HD's
SB Audigy Plat
400w PS
No name CDR
No name CDRW
What I need help selecting is the Mobo. Not sure who's running what but wondering if anyone had some suggestions. I'm sure that any via or nvidia chipset will be fine, just wondering who's had luck where, and if anyone suggest a certain board manufacture.
TY.....

I hate intel... sure their FSB is faster, but every intel computer ive EVER used has at one point or another had something wrong with it whether it be a virus, software not working, or just general bottle-necking of RAM. I have a 1ghz Athlon w/ 512mb RAM and it runs faster than my moms 2ghz Intel4 w/ 512mb RAM. No joke...

Virus & software issues have absolutely NOTHING to due with the processor. Those are OE caused.
Bottle necking of RAM? That's funny, they both use the same technology. The motherboard chipset determines the performance. That's in addition to the memory manufacturer.
Yeah the mental benchmark is as accurate as the butt dyno.

nice... now BACK TO THE SUBJECT....
she wants to stay amd causeit's cheaper and she's use to it. She's affraid of intel... and you all should be.....
Built another system for another friend with a p4 2.5, gig ram, g4 ti, sb audg card... SMOKING quick. Used some new intel chipset that's designed for server apps, quick ass chipset, great bandwidth on the board.

Take a look at Gigabyte motherboards. Also Abit & ASUS make nice boards.
Afraid of Intel? I'd be more worried about an AMD chip burning my house down.....

I'll never build another AMD system, Soon as your monitor goes into sleep mode your computer will lock up. On the last 3 AMD systems ive had, and on a friend amd system, never fails.. heh

Anyone ever have issues or dislikes any of the VIA or Nforce chipsets?

Both are good chipsets. You shouldn't have any issues with either.

Intel is very bad and too slow.
AMD is way better than Intel.
I brought a upgrade the computer to ASUS motherboard from the worse motherboard.
I'm getting the GF4 or 5 to replace 2.

Ended up picking up:
FIC AU13 Sys Board
Athlon 2600 (333)
512mb Kingston mem (2x 256mb chips)
All for about $280.00.

amd vs intel fight on a honda forum. who'da thunk it?
first of all anyone saying AMD is superior right now is simply not educated.
AMD is great for the money, but overall performance is most certainly in the hands of Intel right now.
personally i have never owned an AMD that was anywhere near as stable as my Intel rigs. The Intel chipsets are solid as a rock. AMD's only wish they were.
Via chipsets are notoriously bad. stay far far away. same with SiS.
anyways. since the thread has come to a decision.. that looks to be a subpar setup there shaggin. surely you could have done better for the money.
epox nforce 2 board - 80-90 bucks (much better brand)
xp2500 barton - 85 bucks
512mb pc2700 - 70-80
total around 240-250
