have you guys tried this drink? i love this stuff =), so im making it at home instead of constantly buying it at a tapioca place, but i can't seem to get it right:

bought some thai tea from a local asian market, brewed it, added sugar, ice and poured regular whole milk at the top.... tastes okay, but it seems creamier and darker orange in the restauraunts... am i missing something??

They most likely use a pre-boxed tea at the resturant and then maybe even a soy milk. You can usually ask them what tea they use and they'll tell you. We have Trader Joe stores over here in LA and they carry a lot of that stuf. You should also try Chai tea, good stuff.

I never drank the thai iced milk tea, and maybe in Bangkok. ;)

I drank the japanese bubble mint tea.

Look at the website. It explains better than I could but let me try. Boba balls are large tapioca balls, like tapioca pudding balls on a larger scale, like marble size. You put them in what ever drink you'd like and it adds a different texture not really a taste unless you flavor them seperately. It's like big gummy bears without the sticky chewy. You also use a bigger straw to suck them through. Looks wierd but tastes good. Balls are good!!;)

large round black tapioca balls, they can be called "boba" or "(tapioca) pearls".

Most places usually serve them with larger diameter straws which are just right for the balls to go through. they're fun to chew while you drink. they sorta have a nice taste but you'll have to try it for yourself if you get the chance!

Theres a bunch of tapioca (not pudding) places in the bay area and i seen them around elsewhere (seattle). My friends and i sometimes kick it and drink while we talk about stuff, the drink makes it more enjoyable =) hahahhaha

From what I understand, you can make it with milk, too. I've heard of one called Pearl Milk Tea. Sounds gross but it's really good. I'm not sure from which exact culture though. Check a Google search under boba tea, there's like pages of links...

Finally, I think that's the explanation I've been looking for. I was going to post a question asking what an alternate meaning for boba was. It's a Cantonese slang term, no? I was out with my Chinese posse one day, and we were talking about pearl drinks, and one guy mentioned they were called boba more on the west coast than here....all the Cantonese speakers started to laugh, but the Mandarin speakers had no clue what they were laughing about.....and they wouldn't tell us. Those bastards!

Avacado Milk is my fav. Mmmmmmmm good. But it's not as good with pearls. Coconut milk and taro milk are awesome with pearls.
