I was wondering if a cam gear would help out my honda at all in the power department? It basically just advances or retards timing correct? How much extra power can it make? Any downsides like lower fuel mileage or reliability problems? Thanks! Oh and what brand is best for my EX?

it might have a slight underdriving effect...which may yield hidden hp (assuming the aftermarket cam gear is lighter), but don't quote me on this one and pros and cons depends on how you much you retard or advance the timing..

Yeah I understand that part of it.. that its just a better piece since its lighter and all but I was wondering which way do you do it to see the biggest gain? Retard or Advance? and how much more power could you see out of it?

i think the advance will see more gain. i'd see about 2-3 hp tops

the cam gear will definitely help your car. i have one for my 93 lx thats made by aem. you will definitely feel the power gains, no doubt about that. what it actually does is give you more torque in your lower gears and raises your rpm's a little depending on how you adjust it. but when you adjust it, you also have to adjust your ignition timing as well. but if done right, it is an extremely safe mod to do to your ride. and it is a lot lighter than the stock gear so you will also pick up more hp. a combo of torque and horsepower increase is also good. good luck.

I was told that when you install aftermarket cam gears that you would need to dyno your car to make adjustments to see which degree would give your car better results. Installing cam gears and not making the right adjustments may actually decrease your cars performance. I've heard that some manufacturers include tips for each car on which degree you should put it so you dont have to go dyno....i hope im right?

If you retard the timing you will lose HP but gain torque. If you advance the timing you will gain HP but lose torque.
If this is the only mod you'd have, save your money for something else. This alone isn't going to be worth the $100+ you spend on it.
