ok..now i read in a magazine that the enzo ferarri goes 209..the murcialago (i think thats how its spelled) goes 204 and that the saleen s7 goes 224....i also asked two of my friends and one said that the mclaren f1 is the fastest and the other said that the enzo ferarri is the fastest...i myself believe that the enzo is the fastest...anybody know?????

But actually, what does it really matter? You'll never hit those kinds of speeds on a public road. The better performance stats are the 1/4 mile, 0-60, 60-0, skidpad... those kinds of real world performance capabilities.

When it comes to testing top speed, there are two types. Actual and theoritical. I know that the Saleen S7 (http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=3&article_id=6735&page_number=1) is the fastest car ever built in the United States and theoritically can do 223mph (drag and gearing limited). The Ferrari Enzo (http://www.caranddriver.com/article.asp?section_id=3&article_id=6734&page_number=1) can do 209mph at redline 6th gear. Again, that's theoritical. Gearing and drag limited, the McLaren F1 can supposedly do 231mph. The fastest production street legal car (that I could find, and again, just in theory) is the Vector Avtech.

As for actual tests... I believe the Jaguar XJ220, the McLaren F1, Ferrari F50, and Saleen S7 rate very high up there, but am not sure which is the victor.

i know its not theoritical..i mean..i know i will never have a car like that...its just a fact But i still wonder what the fastest is. I mean i know the saleen is the fastest us made car. But whats the fastest car out of everything?..in the morning at like 1 on the highway by my house.. you could get the ferarri up to 200...im sure it doesnt take long at all to go that fast...maybe ill try with my car...lol

there is the new bugati eb something with 1001 hp that's street legal. it's supposed to hit 260 or so. gotta look it up.


ohh and let's not forget the 92 accord lx ;) over 130mph but it took me 2 minutes to get there :mad:

All those cars could break 200 easy...

it's not theory... they do calculate it via the gear ratio's but it has the power to make it up there and they usually are VERY aerodynamically sound cars.

car&driver tv just took the enso to the ford or chevy proving grounds and hit over 200... I'm sure the mcclaren has been tested to it's limits...

I used to have a video of a ruf porsche doing over 200 or so on the autobahn... passing traffic... my buddy still has it I think it may be on kaaza or bear share too.

And yes I know what you're thinking.... the guages are ruf guages in MPH NOT kph.

OK, so the question is actually "what's the highest top speed of a currently street-legal production car"? Otherwise, it's one of those land racers that does 700 mph +.

The Bugatti isn't production or street-legal yet.
The McLaren is tested faster than the enzo or f50.

I thought I read somewhere, however, that the '88 TT Callaway Sledgehammer pushed 250 mph top speed on a couple of runs.

The fastest (top speed) PRODUCTION car is the Mclaren F1, 231 mph. No questions about that. I've read a 200 page book just about the production of the car, AWESOME!!

If you guys want to talk about Conecept cars, LeMans, or project cars then that's a totally different story.

you are absolutely 110% full of shit, the sledgehammer was a joint between callaway and lingenfelter. callaway did the body and lingenfelter did the drivetrain for him. it is a one-of-a-kind. only one and not another. sold to a japanese collector for around $500,000 american dollars. 880 hp at the tires, TT 350 chevy built to a 383 and a doug nash 4+3 trans (i think the trans is correct, age and alcohol does bad things to a memory). torque numbers i dont know, and it did 254mph on a superspeedway track, was so street docile that they said that you could send your mom to the grocery store in it. in order to get the car up to 250 they had to fashion ducts for the turbos for more air, at the high speeds the aerodynamics sucked air out to the vents so the turbos were not getting sufficent air. anything else? oh yeah and it was not a zr-1--i think thats what you are thinking about.
