for the money you could have lots of choices that would be faster thatn the cars on your list for the fastest on your list I would say GSX DSM, but than those carrs are known to have crankwalk, but all cars have their own problems, but If you know then you are better prepaired to face the issue.

If you can afford it, the GTI VR6, but that is easily the most expensive one out of the bunch. I've heard plenty of stories of GTI's running in the 13's with just a chip, downpipe, and intake.
If not the GTI, then go with the GSX. AWD and boosted, not a bad combo.

For $7000 I would say a first Gen Eclipse/Talon. Id go for AWD.
Id buy an older 5.0 and mod it... But thats me.:o

Yeah dude, don't tell too many people about those cars. They might become as popular as the civic then. And we don't want that to happen now do we!

You won't find a 300zx for that kind of money in good condition. At least I don't think you can.

the crank walk issue is only with the 2nd gen dsm's... go 1st gen and they only have some few and far between head problems (my buddy replaced his 3 times all under warranty).
as far as the gti vr6... they're slow they do ok and all but the fact that vw had to put in a v6 to compete with NA 4 cyl is just sad.
The dsm is DEFINATELY the way to go if you want a cheap starter to put LOTS of money into right off the bat...
Make sure you know what your getting into though... start trolling the dsm boards and ask them for advice... nothing beats personal experience... which I believe non of us have with dsm's.

ok... honestly I didnt understand a hole lot of that article that racing rice posted.. does .35 bearing wear do a lot?
THe 300 zx sounds cool but the insurance would be way too much. So it sounds like a mitsubishi eclipse is just right for me.
But which one? the AWD GSX.. or the RWD GST? If I get RWD will it get rid of the crank walk problem?
Would getting a new crankshaft fix it?
Also I heard that AWD eats up horsepower so would a RWD be faster? i know the AWD would handle better
P.S. I would really want a 2nd gen. They look a lot cooler than the older ones. a 94 or 95 sounds nice. ;)

First of all, do a search for "DSM crankwalk", there are about 6 million things out there about it.
Secondly, there is no such thing as a RWD eclipse from factory. All the RWD eclipses are AWD that have been converted to RWD. They only come in FWD and AWD.
Thirdly, just because an AWD isnt putting as much power to the ground, doesnt mean its not faster. With AWD you dont have to worry about traction problems. FWD turbo car will spin like crazy.
Get the AWD and learn how to launch properly. Its an entire new beast, it takes a little finesse. But once youve got it down, you will have nice runs.
Heres an example of AWD vs FWD:
I had 2 friends that owned DSMs. One was a 95 FWD Talon TSi and the other was a 96 Eclipse GSX (AWD). Both near stock. The GSX had a muffler and an intake. At the track the GSX ran a 14.90. While the TSI ran a 16 something. No, an intake and muffler will not make that kinda difference. The FWD Talon spun like crazy, while the AWD GSX stuck and went. See what I mean now? A better driver can get a FWD DSM into much lower times. But AWD will take the holeshot.
