Well tonight i was dropping off movies at the store....Pull out and one BAD ASS del sol is sitting at the light... I mean body kit..exhaust...the whole works. Im thinking "Damn that is a nice car...." Light changes and he turns. BAM! There is a damn wing that is standing TALLER than the back of his car! GOD I CANT STAND THAT!?!?! Dont those idiots know that those DONT help that they actually hurt performance??? I mean lets look at it rationally:

Wings work on:
Drifters
Top fuel Dragsters
Pretty much anything RWD

Things they dont help:
Anything that is FWD.

Why? you ask.... Well they work on RWD cars simply because they are using the air rushing over them to push down on the drive wheels...The rear ones. When a civic or any other FWD car has them not only do they look ugly enough to were you wanna rip them off yourselfs they create a downforce on the back wheels. WHICH helps only RWD cars. Because when the force is applied to the back lifting up the front occurs. Making the front wheels lose traction causing less acceleration. Why cant people see this? So please anyone that is reading this PLEASE PLEASE dont be an ass and put one of these on and ruin a good car. I beg of you.

i don't think how could they raise the front wheels on a honda since more than 60% of their weight is carried over the front axle ???

I think some peopel do it more for look than performance. And in the look category, you can't really tell people what to do because well, to each his own. Do what you like, not what the next person down the line tells you to like.
So if you want a 10ft tall wing, do it. I might criticize you, but that's my problem, and I'm also guilty of making fun of people. But hey, no one's perfect.

I don't think that there would be any noticable "lack of weight" on the front wheels, unless the car is doing triple digit speeds (which doesn't really happen on Honda's anyway). I think that most of these APC aluminum wings look pretty ghey. But if the driver likes to have a 24" tall Boeing 747 wing on the back of his grocery-getter, more power to him.

Preface: I dislike wings on any street car. Fugly. I'll never buy a car with a wing, even stock.

Moment of clarity: Wings make sense on any car, including FWD, that goes fast enough to create downforce. The purpose isn't to create downforce over the drive wheels - you need drivewheel traction when accelerating hard (e.g. @ low speed), and there's not much downforce in that case. You need downforce at HIGH speed to keep traction, and you need it on ALL 4 wheels (esp the fronts if for high-speed turns). Why do indy cars have spoilers for downforce at the both front and back? 'cause you need downforce everywhere. Doesn't have much to do with which wheels are being driven. FWD touring cars have wings for downforce.

Conclusion: Arguments should be separate. Downforce for fast cars = good. Wings on hondas that never go race faster than 80 mph in a straight line = poseur.

i dont see how they would take away weight from the front wheels since the way i would look at it would be like. the wing would kinda lift off the back end, not the front.

The wing creates a surface for the air to push down on...so its angled like this / the air pushes down and gives the rear wheels more traction at higher speeds...so almost pointless on daily driven fwd cars

spoilers on fwd cars that rarely, if ever, go above 100mph is pointless
if anything they add weight to the rear, making the car heavier (although seemingly insignificant)
if they want to do it for looks, thats fine, but dont expect me to not criticize;)

well the F1 Cars with their spoilers can go upside down on the top of a tunnel at 80mph. you don't need triple digits speeds.

Indy cars do have spoilers in both front and back....But the major ones in on the back and indy cars are RWD... granted downforce is needed but when you purposefully buy something that will create more downforce is moronic... Why is it moronic to purposely buy something that will create more downforce???? If you NEED downforce then it is a GOOD IDEA to purposely buy something that will create it.

Most cars tend to produce body lift at high speeds, not downforce. This must be compensated for with something that can create downforce, in other words a wing.

As has already been stated rear wings DO have purposes on ALL vehicles that travel at speeds high enough to require extra traction to maintain stability regardless of the drivetrain. Please do your homework before going out and making claims that are blatantly false.

Indy cars also have a lot less mass to compensate for, hence they can drive upside down at a lower speed with the same effective downforce than a heavier vehicle.....

And wings don't merely provide a surface for the air to "push down on." Different wings work in different ways. The general idea behind a wing is to provide lift, however it is mounted "upside down" to provide downforce. Some wings merely provide drag and the mounting structure transfers the force of the drag upon a strategic part of the vehicle providing downforce.
