According to what I have read, that would be a D16z7 sohc Vtec....I could be wrong though, But I am pretty sure.

i dunno about 96-98 ex's, but 99-00 ex's vtec was an option. i got a buddy who has a 99 ex non-vtec, so i suggest you look for a vtec solenoid but chances are it is vtec.

Okay, now that we have the vtech, VTEC thing out of the way.. lol
Yes.. Your car is VTEC, even though it doesnt say it on the valve cover like the DOHC versions do.

The only option you got about having VTEC or not is whether you buy an LX or an EX, etc..
EX has a VTEC motor, you dont have options on VTEC or non-VTEC motors from the factory unless you buy a different trim of Civic.

D16y8 is a Vtec motor. I have the same motor in my 2000 Civic. You can hear the Vtec kick in at around 5k RPM. Listen for it, its a very hard to miss sound.
Look for the motor stamp...
I dont think 99-00 Ex's came with a Non vtec motor. I think only the HX-CX were the only ones to come with a Non Vtec motor. Correct me if im wrong.

NO, your car is not a phone, but the D16Y8 IS a VTEC engine and NO, VTEC isn't an option on an EX Civic LOL

i have no idea what type of engine my car has. I have a 93 Civic EX Coupe - Auto.
I heard that the beginning of the VIN can tell you. Is this true?
If so, mine starts with J126XP
Thanks for any feedback.

no, that isn't true...your motor is a D16Z6...found in all 5th Gen (92-95) Civic EX's and SI hatches.

the noise your hearing at 5k i believe is your secondary runners opening up. the "vtec" option on sohc motors is more for good gas milage than performance

unless the previous owner stuck an ex badge on the car, the dude has a 99 civic ex auto w/ no VTEC, i repeat no VTEC.
i was surprised as hell when i saw it too

why do you assume his car doesnt have VTEC? cuz it doesnt say so on his valve cover?

your talking like it makes a night and day difference... its not a performance engine to start with. it kicks in low, and isnt a radical grind on the upper lobe on the cam. if anything it will be an easyer engine to tue with forced induction, and you can get a cam that will still yeild same hp gains

LOL, well, you assume that since it doesn't have VTEC on the valve cover...I assure you that it's VTEC. All EX's have VTEC, his motor is the D16Y8, read the replies bro

While we are on the subject maybe someone can give a newbie a clue. I asked a few weeks ago but didn't get much response(in the newb section). I don't have a Honda as of now but plan on purchasing one in the next couple of months. Mainly for better gas mileage but want to get the fastest I can for the money.
So anyway, which model would be best to get? I'm look for the fastest I can get. Maybe put all the models in order from fastest to slowest. Looking from anywhere 92-00. Thanks for the help. Sorry to hijack the thread.

99-00 Si - fastest
96-00 HX - 2nd best.

funny, ive never seen even 1 EX w/ only intake and a short shifter run a 15.7
but ive seen more than a handful of HX's do it (give or take a COUPLE had exhaust instead of short shifter and were still in the 15.9 range). my gf's HX w/ intake stomps on EX's as well.

Cool, but how does the 115 hp HX get the 10+ hp needed to stomp on an EX?
I thought the HX was made to get good fuel economy, and i know i heard that it doesnt respond as well too mods as the EX and DX do - less hp per mod.

115hp is an understatement.
dont believe everything you see in print - lots of cars are underrated from the factory.

ok, so if the 115 hp the HX is rated at is an understatement, then the 125 hp the EX is rated at must also be an understatement.
-really though, how does an HX stomp an EX.
***Dont get the idea that i am about the Sohc Vtec engine, it sux - cant wait till i get my swap [need money]****

go to HT and do a lil searching, there were like 3 GOOD threads with the EX vs HX debate. quite a bit of information - more than i could type in here.
thanks for the compliment - nah, bought em like that cuz insurance paid for it. would have cost the same if i bought reg. clear ones.
