Why does it seem like VTEC kicks in at different times? Like if i take off at a dead stop, my car is slow...sometimes, other time i can be making a right turn after a dead stop and VTEC will kick in....what the hell. lol thats my question what the hell, when does VTEC kick in.

well most of us are going to tell you that it comes on around 5500rpm. However, there is someone, that will remain nameless, that will tell you that it comes on at 2500...and they are wrong ;)

I think vtec does kick in at 5500 rpm but my friend has that VAFC( i think thats what it is) or something like that...its a remote kind of thing that you can set the Vtec...he sets his vtec to kick in at 4500rpm...love the sound of vtec when it kicks in...

And that would be me. And I said just for his specific make and model. 01 Civic EX 4 door Auto with the D17A2. ;)

lol..i wonder who that person is, that strictly believes in the 2500 RPM...and i agree with the 5500 rpm vtec kick in point...
and the right turn you speak off....are you sure that its the vtec that kicks in....or is it just a "peak" in the powerband?

I highly doubt you feel the VTEC kicking in, its probably just the power curve.

I feel the Vtec kick in in my boys 90 GS...when he hits 4500 rpm you hear a pop in the exhaust and it becomes louder and the car pulls like crazy...

Or it is just easier to loose traction while making a turn and the fact that happens makes u feel like u unleashed some unknown power

I cant really feel much of a difference.. :loco: Power starts to kick in at 3000 Rpms and its a nice steady increase from there.. ;)

Yeah, I do get a change of sound though when it supposedly kicks in.

um... 90 integra? no.
the first vtec engines in america were the 91 nsx's followed by the 93 preludes, then the GSR's in the 3rd gens i believe. you guys are hearing your secondary runners opening. vtec on sohc engines is very minimal... even on a stock h22... all you really hear is the runners opening at 4800 then at 5100 when the vtec cam lobe enables there is the power increase. vtec is not like a turbo or anything. do some reading in the high performacne section on vtec. it is not a save all power feature, expecialy for the sohc engines.
oh and vtec engages at 5150rpms on a h22, and somewhere around 5.5-6 for b16's and b18's i beleive. s2k's are also about 6k rpms.

oh.. another thing.. since i know you guys wont go read about it... the reason the sohc engines do not create the same power is 2 main reasons. first off they do not have the huge option of increasing valve overlap the way a dohc engine does at high rpms. and the cams, which happen to be the reason you get the power increase, are not ground to a performance grind. with an aftermarket cam, you can get a higher, longer lift for the valves, but the truth of the matter is it was designed to ustalize power on the top and bottom end. the dohc engines kinda ignored gas milage on the top end, where the sohc engines created a grind where gas will still be conserved while maintaining a decent amount of power
