Exhaust??

What kind of exhaust do you guys have? I have a 97 Civic EX and I plan on getting a greddy turbo for it, and I want to run a little over the 5.5psi and I need some recommendations on what exhaust to get. Should I get custom piping or get the whole thing from the company? And because I plan on getting turbo someone told me that getting headers would be a waste, as well as an intake...is this true? Should I keep the stock headers? Thanks

lol..when u a get a turbo installed....u cant use headers...and the intercooler runs into the intake manifold....the exhaust manifold is a turbo type one....im not sure on that part...exhaust...someone else would be better to answer that one....talk to a shop..tell em what exactly it is ur doing....

i think 2.5" piping is fine...i don't have a turbo nor do i know much about them...but i'm pretty sure everyone else on here will say the same...

ya I wouldn't waste the money on greddy don't get me wrong they are FANTASTIC exhausts but it's just not worth paying 4-5 hundred dollars on something that gives you maybe 5 more hp than a custom made one or a cheap one.

and ya... the header is replaced by a turbo exhaust manifold and the air system is now sealed (because it's pressurized) so a cai is not a possiblility.. however the intake pipe of the turbo compressor can be routed to take in as cold air as possible but it will just heat up to all hell after it's compressed.

Just run it out the side of the bumper, it sounds great. I drove like that for 2 years while my car was still street legal.

it would actualy be good i believe. less backpressure on the turbo. as far as an exaust, i'd look at a real cat back because you are going to want good flow, im not sure about d16's but h22's will run 3' piping turbo, i have 2.5 right now i think, maybe 2.75'.

What brand of exhaust should I get? Do you guys have any likes or dislike? I need some tips for the newbie....this is the first time I even talked about turbo. That is why im a little afraid on wasting my money because I really dont have the knowledge, especially for all the tuning stuff and everything else. I want to get the exhaust now and later on if I feel capable of not ruining anything with a turbo, thats what I think I want to do.....

The Themal 3" is the best you will buy short of fabing one up. You will have to either remove the cat or modify it to accept the 3" flange though.

I agree with boosted3g and keep in mine about what he mentioned on the flange. You can also get high flow cats with customized 3 inch flanges. A thermal 3 inch will accomodate your needs for sure. There is really nothing else that can top that unless you get a custom set-up. The only thing that will change my mine of NOT getting a thermal 3 inch set-up is a custom 3 inch pipe with maybe a modified N1 muffler. I currently have a custom 2.5 inch. But I wish I did a 3 inch set-up....... higher flow= better for turbo.

At 5.5psi I'd run with a 2.5" exhaust all the way back with straight through mufflers as chambered mufflers don't go well with turbo cars. Hell...I run 12lbs through a 331cid V8 on a daily basis and have a 3" exhaust while making over 500hp and don't see any problems. As far as sticking with one company, it depends on their stuff. I don't know a ton of stuff about Greddy, but I know they make great stuff. That said, the only reason I'd stick with them exclusively is if they have something no one else can offer. Seems to me that Greddy is to imports as Saleen is to Mustangs...good stuff, but REALLY expensive.

Ya it can get pretty expensive but I rather save up and buy the good stuff now and do it right the first time, vs. wasting my money later. I will raise the boost after I get an intercooler and probably other things. Probably up to 8-9 psi...Do you guys think I need to upgrade my internals? If I got a 3" all the way back now with out the turbo installed will it do any harm? Say I do go with a custom pipe what muffler should I go with? And should i just a high flow cat or just a flange that will accecpt a 3' pipe? All these questions.........and in need for answers (I need some help) ;) Thanks alot

In a word, YES. It will eliminate just about all backpressure from your exhaust system and effectively kill your low end torque.

With a full 3" he will loose low end torque but it will be jsut above idle so even with daily driving he wont even be in its power band. When i totally removed my entire exhaust for the first time i didnt loose a single bit of low end torque and i picked up nearly 40 hp at the top end.

the turbo creates all neccisarry back pressure for the engine. after that you want it breathing as free as possible there is NO such thing as TOO open for a turbo app. as long as the turbo isn't some kind of high end ball bearing high flow job on a small displacement engine.

As long as the turbo was on a car of a similar literage you won't need anymore backpressure than the turbo itself provides.

So its alright for me to get the exhaust now or should I wait till I have the turbo ready to be put in? I think im lost on what I should do first....I have a stock civic and money to put into it and have no idea what I should get first.........I want to do it right and not waste my money tho...

I'd do them at the same time. Hell, it'd be easier to both at the same time since the exhaust is going to have to be disconnected to put the turbo in and would probably save you some labor time over doing each individually.

So should I buy the exhaust now or save up for the turbo? Since its winter over here I really dont want to put it on till the spring...Maybe ill get my suspension out of the way....Any suggestions???
