I got this old computer thats decent i guess, (say around 200 mhz) , its got like 1.6 gb harddrive and shitty ram prolly too.. Its a gateway from 1995. What should i get to make it useable again, and how do i know what brand or what type to get so its compatable with my computer (operating system + brand of computer)

Ditch the whole computer. Seriously, its no good anymore. 200MHz barely surfs the web. You can get a 1400MHz AMD chip for ~$50. New mobo ~$60 (integrate video and sound), cheap ram, ~$50, new PSU. This would make a nice system for everyday use, but not for games, etc.
How much are you willing to spend to put together a new computer? I could recommend some setups...

Im going to have to agree.. If you look around, you can find/put together over 1 GHz processors computers for under $300.
Go to www.pricewatch.com and look around.

True that.. I bought a 900 mhz celeron, they shipped me a 600, called the place, had them send the right one, went to call them again to let the guy know it was right, they were out of business, chapter 11... loool.

That really sucks. I only deal with larger companies now for reasons just like this. Its not worth getting ripped off

unless you have some dealer you can buy from that means you are paying considerably more for your parts.
i think if you stay with companies like newegg, mwave, etc. that you'll be just fine. its the smaller companies i shy away from.
