i was wondering about an aftermarket cd-player, and if you need a backing plate to fill the space and mount the radio or if a regular sized radio fits flush into the slot that the original radio goes into?

Yeah, you can get a little dash kit that takes up the extra space with no problem.

yup, best buy sells the dash kit for $15. also get a harness while you are there. the ones that i found in the autostores are crap.

if you wanted to go real high end you could fit an equalizer in the extra space. but I get the feeling you're just talking about a step up from stock, not audio craziness.
