When i drive long distances i like to get there fast so i go above the speed limit, oviously there is always the risk of the cop not driving around with his radar on,(very few do this during the day). so what do you prefer a radar decrot or a radar jammer/blocker or what every they are called.
Can anyone please put in your $0.02 it woule be greatly appriciated. Thanks in Advance

i think a radar would do just fine.. i have one and i kinda travel long distances sometimes and it helps a lot i dont think goin and paying a fortune for one of those radar jammers is worth it and arent those illegal or something? but for 50$ i got myself a radar and it helps out probs about the same as one of those jammers.. but thas my 0.02 cents..
why the hell are you asking this question? you should already know the answer *cough* Escort Passport 8500 *cough* ;)

Buy a NICE radar detector and just be careful. I got hosed even with my detector doing 25+ over coming over a hill on I5  Luckily he wrote me up for 19 over.

My next move will be a scanner, but I want a nice mobile one that I can mount somewhere w/o an external antenna.

**********my two cents***********
radar dectors only work if there is traffic in fron of you. the officer can pause the radar and wait for your ass to come down the road.... unpause it and get you. the detectors only works when the radar is picking someone up in front of behind you. it wont help you if your on the highway and the next car in front of you is half a mile away. agreed it is awsome for traffice use in the city.
scanners really wont help you. someone has been watching the fast and the ferious a little too much. there is so much police activity going on that it would be really hard to tell where the speed traps are. trust me i have a scanner for home use. scanners are cool to listen to cell phone calls though.

I drive on a lot of rural, out of the way roads, and I thought a scanner wouldn't be a bad idea... is that not the case? What is the range on them, around 3 miles?

Certain Radar detectors have 360° Total Perimeter Protection
Detects signals wherever they come from. No gaps.. I have the Whistler DE1700 and it has the 360° Protection. It has saved my A$$ pleanty of times.. Especially Highway driving..
Just remember.. If you plan on getting a radar detector. Don't go cheap! You get what you pay for!

r u talking about scanner or a CB radio? i agree if you drive down road that you dont know, or roads that you wont see anyone for a couple of days its a good idea to get a CB radio. on a good day a CB radio can travle 20-25 miles. scanners only let you listen in to convos

tru. radar detectors will warn you if there is a cop running radar around you. but wut if no one is around you, lets say your driving down the highway and your the only car on the road.... and the officer isnt running radar yet, you pass the cop doing 20 over the speed limit, he lasers you, the cop is gonna give you a new hole.
think about it.... is it worth it? to speed? in my eyes, its not.

One thing.. If I pass a cop and I'm going over 20mph.. I will slow down... Anywho.. that's why you have to make sure your radar detects all radar, laser and safety radar systems. The only way they can clock how fast your going is to aim towards your Plates.. Once that signal is caught by your detector. You will have a few seconds to slow down..
As for your statement that you have to have a car around you for your radar to work. I would have to disagree.. I've been in situations where I'm driving down a highway by myself ( I live in W. Washington on a island) and my detector went off even before the cop was in view.. It's only at low warning ( Ka band warning 1) but as he came over the hill and got closer.. That's when it started flashing and saying warning 9... That's when I slow down..
I'm not saying that you drive like a mad man just because you have a radar detector.. Just drive smartly.. Use commen sense..

can't use radar up here, and i've never gotten a ticket and trust me if you "driving" there you aint fast; its when your "flying" there, now thats fast. I just back off goign over hills and bunch myself behind traffic goign through city's/towns and i've never had a problem.

spend $3K and get the kind that is custom built into the bumpers and fenders connected to an LCD screen that points where the signal is coming from. this kind also senses the fluctuation in the ions in the air from previous scans. The manufacturers of this kind will pay any ticket that you get and they even set up lawers to fight your ticket in court so you get 0 points. They sell this at RKST by my house...wish I could get it

Your problem has less to do with luck than it has to do with your lead foot. Luck gets you out of the ticket AFTER the cop pulls you over, your own driving gets you pulled over.
Lots of people I know got pulled over MORE after getting a radar detector. Probably because they felt like they could speed without getting caught, and they did and....well, they got caught.
I wouldn't recommend radar jammers for long trips unless you know they're legal in all the states you'll cross. Same for detectors, although I think states usually post signs at the border stating the legality of detectors.
Laser detectors are almost completely useless. Cops like laser for 2 reasons. 1) speed accuracy. 2) individual vehicle accuracy. If a cop points a laser at the car in front of you and gets a reflection off his plate, you won't know the cop is using laser yet. You'll probably know if he's using radar, though.
For big speed traps get a map and a CB. Sometimes drivers will mention speedtraps on the CB and, if you're familiar with the area or watch mile markers (if the mile is mentioned) then you'll know about the trap in advance.
Or just don't speed. Or just pay the friggin ticket for breaking the law. :bandit:

The jammers are the bomb though A friend of mine had it (his bro owned a cartel stereo shop... the parts apparently cost 100-200 bucks it's all install that makes it expensive. his bro did it for free obviously)
We were racing on the highway he was ahead of me and doing 95-100 I GOT PULLED OVER (ya i was doing 90 too.) He didn't... the cop asked me if it was a friend of mine because he couldn't get a reading and was pretty pissed about it.

nonovurbizniz...so what happened afterwards?
And I also heard that cops can even detect scanners (not jammers just plain scanners). Becuase I was debating about getting one here to use in Canada (just buy in the states...use here) Even though it is illegal, the only thing a cop can do is just destroy it I believe. But that's with a jammer not a scanner right? I'm confused about this whole business...

well i would look into it, because i'm pretty sure they'll be able to charge you. You are breaking the law and i'm sure there's a ticket for breaking the law and you'll also lose the jammer/scanner

They do, but most all new detectors have VG2 cloaking which is supposed to shut them down when a cop is scanning for them. I'm not sure how well it works though.

there was no afterwards besides me getting a $198 ticket (the cop actually reduce the speed he trapped me at (which was 85) down to 75.) and my buddy ragged on me for months about it...
his brother actually offered to do install the same system on my car for $250 (I've since checked out other places that sell the same thing and I've never seen it for under 800 and that was with 1 front jammer no rear) but I didn't have the money at the time.
And I know nothing about the canadian laws or detection methods of any kind.
good luck

Detecting a scanner, a scanner being a passive device that listens to police radio? I mean it's very possible, theoretically. I'm highly surprised to hear of the detection being used. Then again, I guess if they're illegal and the cops are serious about keeping them off the streets for any reason then they'd invest the money in detection devices.
Sounds like you shoulda gotten the jammer. Haha. But then again, if you passed the cop and didn't know about him, then he woulda found out you were speeding anyways and maybe found the jammer (not a big deal unless they're illegal).
I've thought about getting a detector, but I don't know many people to have gotten pulled over with one and NOT gotten a ticket. I've been in a few cars pulled over without jammers and none of them got tickets. I didn't get the ticket the one night I was pulled over either. :bandit:
